Chair Westlund called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.

Megan Feeney, Coordinator, MSPIFF at Edina presented information to the Arts and

Culture Commission about the Minneapolis, St. Paul International Film Festival which will
be held at the Edina Theater as one of their venues in April 2025.
Commission discussed the opportunity and gave suggestions to Feeney on how to
further promote the event.

7.1. 2025 Workplan Updates
Initiative 1: Art Center Colocation at Southdale Library
- Zbaren discussed the City Council Work session that the ACC members attended on
Tuesday, Jan. 21. At that meeting, Council was briefed on the progress of the project.
- Fulton answered questions that came up after ACC members digested the presentation
from their last meeting.
Initiative 2: Edina Art Grant Program
- Faeth discussed recommendations to improve the Art Grant Program as the initiative
group moves forward to begin the process of soliciting for applications.
- Commission discussed changes and agreed that the Arts and Culture Commission
should be acknowledged for the grants in marketing materials.
- Initiative group discussed the application period opening on Feb. 15 and closing on April
1 this year. Timeline was discussed for the calendar year program.
Initiative 3: Review Public Art Opportunities for New City Facilities and Locations

Initiative 4: Commission Participation in Community Events
- nothing to report at this time
Initiative 5: Utility Box Art Wrap Program
- Fulton reported on process and mentioned that the timeline of the Utility Box program
has not yet been established.

Commissioner Faeth announced her resignation from the Arts and Culture Commission
effective Feb. 27, 2025.

Appoint Commission Chair and Vice Chair effective March 2025 through February 28, 2026.
Information/Background:
Annually, the Commission shall elect from its members a Chair and Vice Chair to serve a term of one
year.
The responsibilities of the Chair include:
• Working with the Staff Liaison to prepare the meeting agenda
• Leading regular meetings and facilitating discussion
• Encouraging participation by all members and the public
• Maintaining meeting decorum
• Facilitating development of the annual work plan
• Consulting with members regarding attendance issues
The responsibilities of the Vice Chair include:
• Performing the duties of the Chair if they are unavailable
• Supporting the Chair as needed
No member may serve more than three consecutive terms as Chair. There are no term limits for
Vice Chair

Item Title: Minneapolis–St. Paul International Film Festival - Megan Feeney

Information/Background:
The Minneapolis–St. Paul International Film Festival will be showing 19 films at the Edina Theater from
April 4–10: the film schedule is now posted on mspfilm.org. The MSP Film Society would like
volunteers at every film to hand out ballots as viewers enter the theater and then collect them as
people exit, and you can sign up to volunteer for particular shifts at mspfilm.org/volunteer/ (you'll
receive a free ticket for the films you volunteer for; volunteers can be younger than 18 as long as an
adult is working with them). All commissioners are invited to the MSPIFF@EDINA opening event
before the film Speak (starts at 7 pm) at Raag restaurant on 50th Street, 5:30–6:30, on Friday, April 4.
Megan will speak briefly at our meeting on March 27, and she will also be the site manager at the
Edina Theater to help coordinate volunteers there.

Creative Cartooning – Character Creation Studio
Mondays, April 14 – May 19, 6:00 – 7:30
What are the basics of bringing a character to life? In
this class, we will explore the head, facial features and
hairstyles, as well as emotions and expressive poses. Put
them all together and you'll be ready to start illustrating
your own characters in your own story world! Bring your
own sketchbook or work with paper the Art Center
provides. Ages 9 – 14. Instructor: Violet-Conchita Sunde
Art Sampler
Wednesdays, April 16 – May 21, 4:45 – 6:00
Join us for a variety of lessons you may not get in
school! Pop Art sculpting, plaster gauze mask making,
watercolor landscape, Wayang Indonesian puppets and
acrylic Impressionism painting are examples of topics
that may be covered over this 6-week session.

For Adults
Digital Illustration with Procreate
Tuesdays, May 6 - 20, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Learn techniques of digital illustration, color theory,
composition and more in this 3-week introduction to
Procreate. Each week students (ages 14 to adult) will
incorporate new ideas and concepts into an illustration
to build skill, confidence and creativity. Students need
their own tablet loaded with the Procreate app and
Apple Pencil. Instructor: Jordyn Myhran $75
Gel Printing Workshop
Saturday, May 10
In this lively 3-hour workshop, we will explore some of
the fun and exciting approaches to printmaking with
Gelli plates. Gelli plates are a wonderful surface for
layering acrylic paint, stencils and various items and
tools to create one-of-a-kind colorful monoprints. These
prints can be used for collage, mixed media works, cards
or as stand-alone artwork. This workshop is a great
introduction to a versatile medium. No need to bring a

Beginning Drawing
Wednesdays, April 16 – May 21, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Drawing can be intimidating, but learning a few basic
techniques can improve your skills and make drawing
much more fun! This no-pressure group setting will
present such techniques as portraits, still life,
perspective, shading and measuring. Instructor Amanda
Wirig leads this fun and engaging six-week class. $140
Realistic Painting – Studio
Mondays, April 14 – May 19, 1 - 4 pm

Join us for focused study and guidance with award-
winning artist instructor and coach Louise Gillis. All
levels welcome. Held at the Edina Senior Center. $175
Oil Painting – Beginning
Wednesdays, April 16 – May 21, 6 – 8:30 pm
Join us to explore this classic medium in a supportive
environment. Begin by sketching your subject (a simple
still life) onto your canvas. Move on to learn color
mixing, shading and brushstroke techniques, layering
and other basic skills of applying paint to your canvas.
As you work, you will build an understanding of your
tools - including paints, solvents and brushes - and how
to care for them. Instructor: Rachel Madden, $175
Oil Painting – Intermediate/Advanced
Tuesdays, April 15 – May 20, 6 – 8:30 pm,
If you have taken beginning oil painting or have some
experience with the medium, this class is for you!
Continue to learn color mixing as you paint subjects of
your choice. Work on key issues such as design,
brushwork, and understanding color as value. Practice
drawing with the brush and explore different ways to
achieve paintings you can be proud of. Instructor: Scott

Watercolor Painting – Beginning Level 1
Wednesday afternoons, April 16 – 30, 2 – 4 pm

In this 3-week class, explore foundational concepts of
design, value and color theory. Learn and practice
various techniques and use them in creating simple
compositions. This class is appropriate for people who
are brand-new to watercolor painting or have had some

Wednesday afternoons, May 7 – 21, 2 – 4 pm

If you have tried the three-week Beginning Watercolor

skills with directed practice and exercises, join us for this
follow-up course. With small-group instruction and a
supportive learning environment, this class will help you
start working toward your own style in landscapes,

Inspired by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, we’ll work in bright,
bold colors to complete pop art projects, comic-style drawings, and color-
blocked collage. This camp is perfect for artists who like bold colors and
expressive designs! Join teaching artist Amanda Wirig to create your
unique designs.
July 21–24
Young Movie Makers
The Young Movie Makers camp is designed for teens interested in the world of
filmmaking. Over the course of the camp, participants will learn the essentials of
making their own short films, from brainstorming ideas to editing the final cut.
It’s an opportunity for budding filmmakers to explore their creativity, collaborate
with others, and develop hands-on skills in the filmmaking process. Join the
multi-talented instructor Jordyn Myrhan for this fun and immersive experience.

Metalworking with the WOW Mobile Metal Lab
The WOW team takes each artist through the entire process of casting metal –
from safety gear to surface treatments – and demonstrates just how accessible
this ancient process can be. It’s hands-on, interactive, exciting, empowering,
collaborative work.

projects, you’ll build models, design dream rooms – even create a mini-city.

Mini Modern Masters
We love artists like Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso with their innovative use of
color, paint, texture – and their new ways of looking at things. Kids will create
their own works inspired by these modern masters, learning new techniques
in the process.
July 7-10
Cartooning and Graphic Novels
This week-long camp is designed for young artists who are passionate
about comics, cartoons, and graphic storytelling. Campers will explore the
fundamentals of cartooning, character design, panel layout, and narrative
structure while creating their own original comic strips and graphic novel pages.

Galactic Art Odyssey
Embark on a creative journey through the cosmos at Galactic Art Odyssey,
a space-themed art camp designed for aspiring young artists! This week’s
adventure invites campers to explore the wonders of the universe while
unleashing their creativity through various artistic mediums and materials
including painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Pop Art Paradise
Print Making! Collage! Painting! Take an artistic adventure exploring the skills
and techniques of POP ART. Inspired by artists like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons,
we’ll have a great time making art with bold color, shapes, and sizes.

Smash, Boom, Art!
Designed for kids to explore their artistic talents in a way that’s dynamic and
fun — with an emphasis on the art-making process rather than just the finished
product. You’ll use a variety of materials to sculpt, paint and build as you
interpret color, movement, sound and form. Develop new skills and a deeper
love for the “controlled chaos” of artistic expression.
August 4 – 7
Fur, Feathers, & Fantasy
If you love animals and love to use your imagination, this camp is for you!
Does your cat have wings? Is your dog secretly a dragon? Learn techniques
for illustrating animals, then blend art and imagination to explore both real
and fantasy worlds of animals. You’ll use a variety of materials and techniques
to bring to life creatures from your wildest dreams!
August 11 – 14
Myths & Legends
Explore the art of myth and legends as we make some magic together! With
famous Greek myths as inspiration, we will create our own dragons, beasts,
flying horses - using your imagination to tell epic stories. Exchange your
sword for a paintbrush, try your hand a printmaking and create 3D sculptures
and more!

State Fair Fun! (to be held at the Edina Art Center)
Try your hand at seed art, create a Ferris wheel, sculpt your farm friends...
and more! Have fun creating art inspired by the sights and sounds of the
Great Minnesota Get Together.

Story Worlds Camp for Kids
Have you ever wondered how artists create their ideas for cartoons, comics,

and animation, to put your own ideas together into a full-fledged story world.
