Item Title: Edina Art Grant Program - 2025 Proposed Grant Recipients
Action Requested:
Edina Art Grant Initiative Group met to select the 2025 recipients for this year's Edina Art Grant. Of
the 13 applications received, the initiative group selected six recipients to receive grants totaling
$5,000. Commission will receive a report on the selected recipients to approve for funding.
Information/Background:
Edina Art Grant - 2025
• 13 applications received
• The Edina Art Grant Initiative Team choose grant applicants with strong goals,
clear planning and execution plans, as well as a focus on diverse artistic
experiences for a range of ages in our community and broad exposure.
• We recommend that the Edina Arts and Culture Commission approve 6 grant recipients to
receive the approved $5,000.
Grant Recipient #1- Edina Asian American Alliance (EAAA) - Asian American and
Pacific Islander (AAPI) Festival
• In observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month, EAAA will host
the AAPI Festival. Celebration and elevation of AAPI art, cultures, and communities in Edina.
• Festival planned and implemented by EAAA – an intergenerational, grassroots coalition of
students, parents, and community members allied in deep commitment to Asian and Asian
America youth in the Edina Community.
• AAPI Festival will take place Saturday, May 17th, 12pm- 4pm at Rosland Park
• Requesting $1,000 – to be used in support of the event by providing funding for artist
honorariums, space rentals, and audio productions, etc.
• Initiative Team Thoughts and Recommendation:
1. Extremely well-planned with clear purpose of intent with goal to share AAPI culture
and community, while appealing to a broader audience through education and
engagement within the Edina community.
2. Award $1,000 with recommendation EAAA use grant funds to support artist
honorariums
Grant Recipient #2- Early Learning Center Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) – Early
Learning Center Mural Project

• Murals would be created by a resident artist and depict animal characters and scenes
representing Early Learning Center (ELC) preschool class groups - Caterpillars, Fish,
Hedgehogs, Lions and Owls. The mural artist would honor the animals, and the multitude of
families represented at the Early Learning Center.
• Edina Early Learning Center Gym. This gym hosts PTO- sponsored events, day to day use by
teachers and children, and afterschool childcare. The space would also be open to the public
on non-school days.
• Over 350 children enrolled in the program
• ELC families and their children represent over 15 cultural groups including: Tibetan, Somali,
Mexican, Venezuelan, Chinese, Japanese, Laotian, Indian, Pakistani, and Americans
representing different racial groups.
• Planned and designed by ELC PTO in coordination with Edina Public Schools.
• Project implemented through design meetings prior to summer and start the mural painting
June – August.
• Requesting $1,000 – to be used to purchase a variety of paint and supplies needed for the
murals.
• Initiative Team Thoughts and Recommendation:
1. Well-organized and seem to have necessary approvals for execution.
2. Planned community input sessions and development of project committee
3. Thoughtful incorporation of diverse cultural elements and representation of families.
4. Multi-purpose space where members of the community can engage and partake
5. Like that volunteers will be involved with the painting
6. Award $1,000
Grant Recipient #3 – Local artist, Donte Mearon – Community printmaking project
• Artist would plan and implement a community printmaking project at the Edina Art Fair
inviting visitors to learn about printmaking and add their own art onto a community canvas.
Artist was awarded an Edina Art Grant in 2024 for the project of $500 and used this to
purchase supplies for community printmaking. This year, artist asking for additional funds to
purchase supplies and create water marbling art kits for visitors to take-home.
• Project would take place at Edina Art Fair, June 6 – 8
• Requesting $1,000 – project supplies including funds for take-home kits.
• Initiative Team Thoughts and Recommendation
1. Great addition to EAF programming while supporting a local artist/educator
2. Focused on young and family audiences
3. Community-building through shared experience and exposure to diverse forms of
artmaking
4. Increased grant allows for take home elements for kids to continue their artistic
experience
5. Award $1,000
Grant Recipient #4 – 50th & France Business Association – The 50th & France Summer
Concert Series – Student Performances
• The 50th & France Summer Concert Series, now in its fifth year of enlivening the plaza in
Edina downtown to create community with live music and an opportunity to spotlight
student performers during the summer months.
• Concerts held Friday evenings, June 13 – September 6, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, outdoors at the
Nolan Mains Plaza (within 50th & France business district).
• Requesting $650 – provide student performers $50 each week, for 13 weeks (June 13 –
September 6)

1. Well-established program that focuses on a specific targeted audience
2. Nice marketing plan to recruit students with minimal to no barriers of participation
3. Award $500
Grant Recipient #5 – Morningside Theatre Company (MTC) – Plaza Performances
• In partnership with 50th & France Business Association, Members of the MTC community put
on an hour-long interactive performance for children of all ages which includes a variety of
songs, storytelling and crafts.
• Plaza Performances take place Saturdays, June 21st, July 12th and August 2nd from 10 am – 11
am, outdoors at the Nolan Mains Plaza (within 50th & France business district).
• Requesting - $1,000 – funding for three actors and one director with rehearsal, setup,
marketing and performances.
• Initiative Team Recommendation
1. Theatre medium is nice contrast to other applicants
2. Focus on free programming for families and children
3. Award $500
Grant Recipient #6 – Edina Art Fair – Emerging Artists Program
• Edina Art Fair, now in its 58th year, has featured some of the best fine artists from Minnesota
and nationally. For the past few years, Edina Art Fair has also showcased up-and-coming
emerging artists. For 2024, the Fair welcomed emerging artists in an Emerging Artist
Marketplace. The hope is to bring this project back for 2025 and secure 10-15 artist booths.
• Emerging Artist Marketplace – Edina Art Fair, June 6-8, in 50th & France Business district
• Requesting $1,000 – directly supporting Emerging Artist Marketplace (10-15 artist booths).
• Initiative Team Recommendation
1. Nice addition to EAF programming
2. Will reach and appeal to wide audiences
3. Supports individual artists within organized program
4. Award $1,000

Retro Pop Art Party
Inspired by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, we’ll work in bright,
bold colors to complete pop art projects, comic-style drawings, and color-
blocked collage. This camp is perfect for artists who like bold colors and
expressive designs! Join teaching artist Amanda Wirig to create your
unique designs.
July 21–24
Young Movie Makers
The Young Movie Makers camp is designed for teens interested in the world of
filmmaking. Over the course of the camp, participants will learn the essentials of
making their own short films, from brainstorming ideas to editing the final cut.
It’s an opportunity for budding filmmakers to explore their creativity, collaborate
with others, and develop hands-on skills in the filmmaking process. Join the
multi-talented instructor Jordyn Myrhan for this fun and immersive experience.

Metalworking with the WOW Mobile Metal Lab
The WOW team takes each artist through the entire process of casting metal –
from safety gear to surface treatments – and demonstrates just how accessible
this ancient process can be. It’s hands-on, interactive, exciting, empowering,
collaborative work.

Welcome to the world of architecture! Working as teams and with individual
projects, you’ll build models, design dream rooms – even create a mini-city.

Mini Modern Masters
We love artists like Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso with their innovative use of
color, paint, texture – and their new ways of looking at things. Kids will create
their own works inspired by these modern masters, learning new techniques
in the process.
July 7-10
Cartooning and Graphic Novels
This week-long camp is designed for young artists who are passionate
about comics, cartoons, and graphic storytelling. Campers will explore the
fundamentals of cartooning, character design, panel layout, and narrative
structure while creating their own original comic strips and graphic novel pages.
July 14–17
Galactic Art Odyssey
Embark on a creative journey through the cosmos at Galactic Art Odyssey,
a space-themed art camp designed for aspiring young artists! This week’s
adventure invites campers to explore the wonders of the universe while
unleashing their creativity through various artistic mediums and materials
including painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Pop Art Paradise
Print Making! Collage! Painting! Take an artistic adventure exploring the skills
and techniques of POP ART. Inspired by artists like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons,
we’ll have a great time making art with bold color, shapes, and sizes.
July 28 – July 31
Smash, Boom, Art!
Designed for kids to explore their artistic talents in a way that’s dynamic and
fun — with an emphasis on the art-making process rather than just the finished
product. You’ll use a variety of materials to sculpt, paint and build as you
interpret color, movement, sound and form. Develop new skills and a deeper
love for the “controlled chaos” of artistic expression.
August 4 – 7
Fur, Feathers, & Fantasy
If you love animals and love to use your imagination, this camp is for you!
Does your cat have wings? Is your dog secretly a dragon? Learn techniques
for illustrating animals, then blend art and imagination to explore both real
and fantasy worlds of animals. You’ll use a variety of materials and techniques
to bring to life creatures from your wildest dreams!
August 11 – 14
Myths & Legends
Explore the art of myth and legends as we make some magic together! With
famous Greek myths as inspiration, we will create our own dragons, beasts,
flying horses - using your imagination to tell epic stories. Exchange your
sword for a paintbrush, try your hand a printmaking and create 3D sculptures
and more!

State Fair Fun! (to be held at the Edina Art Center)
Try your hand at seed art, create a Ferris wheel, sculpt your farm friends...
and more! Have fun creating art inspired by the sights and sounds of the
Great Minnesota Get Together.

Story Worlds Camp for Kids
Have you ever wondered how artists create their ideas for cartoons, comics,
and video games? Bring your imaginary characters and worlds to life with
this afternoon camp designed for kids 9 - 14 years old who love drawing and
writing. Join instructor Violet-Conchita Sunde, who specializes in cartooning
and animation, to put your own ideas together into a full-fledged story world.
