Prescribed Burns Planned in Parks and Natural Areas
Edina, Minn., Oct. 10, 2025 – Prescribed burns will take place in some Edina parks and natural spaces this fall and winter to manage invasive species and encourage native plants.
Nearby neighborhoods will be notified of these burns in advance via City Extra emails and Nextdoor.
Burns are conducted under strict conditions to limit disturbance to neighbors. Still, it’s possible people will see and smell smoke. Be prepared to close your windows, especially when
not at home.
The crews involved are trained and certified for this work, and all burn plans are approved by the Edina Fire Department.
Prescribed burns have been conducted in Edina parks for several years. They simulate the natural cycle of native ecosystems. Benefits include limiting woody encroachment, controlling
invasive species, thatch reduction and stimulation of native plants through nutrient recycling. They are an excellent way to manage these natural spaces in our city.
