Taking precautions helps keep everyone safe while trick-or-treating or gathering in the neighborhood. "Although Halloween is a fun night, it's important for everyone to keep safety tips in mind while trick-or-treating, handing out candy or driving through neighborhoods," said Police Sgt. Anna Eckstein. Add reflective tape or arm bands to Halloween costumes or trick-or-treating bags to increase visibility of pedestrians. Carry glowsticks or flashlights. Use face paint instead of masks that could limit vision. Take care to check for vehicles before crossing the street, and cross at crosswalks or intersections. Only visit known neighborhoods, and do not go into the houses of strangers. Drive slowly, remove distractions and stay alert. Homeowners should turn on porch lights, clear walkways and secure pets. Inspect all candy and throw away anything that has been opened or doesn’t seem right. Use a “buddy system” to get everyone home safely and prevent walking alone. If children are trick-or-treating without an adult, plan a route for them. Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. "Our officers are looking forward to handing out candy when we can! We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween," said Eckstein. For more information about the Edina Police Department, visit EdinaMN.gov/Police. -30-
