PROCLAMATION
FRIENDS OF THE EDINA LIBRARY DAY
September 13, 2025
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Edina Library, founded in 1965, were a driving force in building a new community library in 1969, and their support helped finance the purchase of equipment,
furniture, supplies and books for that library; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Edina Library’s ever-popular book sales help recycle nearly 20,000 books per year, raising revenue for continued library support and keeping these books out
of landfills, and since 1971; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Edina Library’s book sales have raised nearly $500,000 for materials for the Edina library and for contributions to the Hennepin County Library budget; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Edina Library Board members visit Edina schools to encourage and assist all students in obtaining their own Hennepin County library cards, with the goal of
every Edina student having an individual library card; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Edina Library have expanded their mission in recent years to include support for literacy and lifelong learning in the community by partnering with Edina
Community Education to support the Great Decisions Speaker Series; and the Friends’ unique partnership with the Edina Senior Center makes possible the extremely popular author talks
and other programs, such as Read a Book Day Bingo; and
WHEREAS, today, when many library friends’ groups are disbanding as their volunteers age out, The Friends of the Edina Library is thriving and hopes to continue library support for another
60 years.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of Edina, do hereby proclaim Sept. 13, 2025, as
FRIENDS OF THE EDINA LIBRARY DAY
in the City of Edina to honor The Friends of the Edina Library in recognition of their 60 years of service to the Edina community in the areas of encouraging appreciation of books and
literacy, of providing programming for all ages and of offering opportunities for lifelong learning.
