PROCLAMATION
HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA DAY
JULY 6, 2025
WHEREAS, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, born on July 6, 1935, is globally recognized as a spiritual leader, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and a tireless advocate
for peace, compassion, and nonviolence; and
WHEREAS, His Holiness has dedicated his life to fostering understanding amongst diverse peoples and religions, all the while promoting kindness, and encouraging the commitment to compassion
as a fundamental human value; and has inspired Minnesota residents through his multiple visits and by his personal example of how a life should be lived; and
WHEREAS, The City of Edina values and celebrates these values of compassion, respect, and unity as fundamental principles for our own community and the manner in which it is governed;
and
WHEREAS, The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota, founded in 1992, with its history of advocating for human rights, along with other local partner Tibetan organizations, supports
the vibrant Tibetan community in Minnesota, home to the second-largest Tibetan population in the United States, whose diaspora enriches our state’s cultural, economic, and social fabric;
and
WHEREAS, The City of Edina affirms its commitment to both our own and the broader Tibetan community through continued learning, embracing their cultural values, and engaging in ongoing
meaningful collaboration.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of Edina, do hereby proclaim July 6, 2025, as
HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA DAY
in the City of Edina in honor of His Holiness’s 90th birthday and in recognition of the Dalai Lama’s lifelong dedication to compassion, peace, and humanity.
