Staff present: HRRC Staff Liaisons MJ Lamon and Kelly Dumais. Absent members: Commissioners Martin, Rinn, and Student Commissioner Ramesh. III.Approval Of Meeting Agenda Motion by Ellen Kennedy to approve the meeting agenda. Seconded by Maggie Vecchio-Smith. Motion Passed. IV.Approval Of Meeting Minutes Motion by Maggie Vecchio-Smith to approve the meeting minutes from the May Human Right and Relations Commission. Seconded by Heather Edelson. Motion Passed. A.May 24, 2016 Draft Meeting Minutes V.Community Comment Keith Kostuch requested that the HRRC focus on the current genocide of Christians in the Middle East as a part of the commission's genocide awareness initiative. VI.Reports/Recommendations A.2016 Work Plan Updates Community Conversations The committee will be presenting a draft report at the July HRRC meeting. Sharing Values, Sharing Community Committee reported that the upcoming HRRC event: "Leading a Meaningful Life:a conversation with religious leaders about faith, joy, appreciation and gratitude" will be on October 27th, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the DRAFT Hughes Pavilion at Centennial Lakes. Human Rights City Designation Commissioner Kennedy gave a presentation on the Human Rights City designation process. The working group will have a draft resolution ready for the Commission's review at the July HRRC meeting. B.2017 Work Plan Ideas The HRRC began working on the 2017 work plan VII.Correspondence And Petitions none VIII.Chair And Member Comments Student Commissioner Kearney: She is interning with the Advocates for Human Rights and they are interested in building connections with the Edina HRRC. Commissioner Edwards: She as well as many women, lost a mentor and a role model for women in sports with the passing of coach Pat Summit today. Commissioner Kennedy: There is an Event that the World Without Genocide is hosting about the White Rose Student Resistance group in Nazi Germany. IX.Staff Comments Liaison Dumais The City hired a new sustainability coordinator who will be starting in July. X.Adjournment Motion by Ellen Kennedy to adjourn the June 28, 2016 HRRC meeting. Update Website Progress Report: Commission selected Lauren Morse-Wendt as the 2016 recipient in recognition of her collaborative leadership in developing support for the 66 West project and for advancing a community conversation about affordable housing and homeless youth. Progress Report: Annual DOR event held on April 10, 2016, focused on Women in the Holocaust and Genocides, featuring guest speaker St. Paul artist and Holocaust survivor Lucy Smith, and talk by Dr. Ellen Kennedy on Ravensbruck, a women’s concentration camp. In addition, the committee purposefully “branded” the event this year with the creation of a new poster design that will be used in all future DOR events. Communication – social media, press release The HRRC is hoping to secure Human Rights City Designation in the year 2016. Progress Report: Working group completed multiple presentations to Edina civic /community groups on what it means to be a human rights city, sought best practices on addressing human rights issues from several Human Rights cities, and prepared a draft resolution for presentation to council for the city of Edina to resolve to be a Human Rights City, with the goal to be proactive (rather than just reactive) regarding human rights issues. INTRODUCTION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Human Rights City Resolution City of Edina Human Rights City Resolution, 2016 WHEREAS, the United Nations passed a Resolution proclaiming the year commencing on December 10, 2008 the International Year of Human Rights Learning, spurring a movement devoted to increasing awareness about human rights violation and promoting education about human rights issues; and WHEREAS, one such initiative that resulted from the United Nations Resolution is the “Human Rights City” project that aims to develop “Human Rights Cities” throughout the world in an attempt to build infrastructure for racial justice, conflict prevention, human security, enduring development, and create a place for active civic engagement at the local, national, and global level; and, WHEREAS, members of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2013 committed to uphold and promote international human rights, in collaboration with state and local government agencies and officials, as well as local communities; and WHEREAS, a Human Rights City is one whose residents and local authorities come to understand that human rights, when widely known as a way of life, assist in identifying issues and informing the actions in the community for meaningful positive economic, political, cultural, and social change; and WHEREAS, as a Human Rights City, Edina will join other human rights cities on virtually every continent around the world and in many U.S. cities (e.g. Boston, MA; Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC; Columbus, IN; Eugene, OR; Iowa City, IA; Pittsburgh, PA; Washington, D.C.;) to provide leadership and advocacy to secure, protect, and promote human rights for all people; and WHEREAS, being a Human Rights City makes it a model for communities in the US and around the world to witness practical ways the human rights framework can make every person a partner in enduring change; and WHEREAS, a Human Rights City commits to reducing discrimination, inequality, racism, and xenophobia in all aspects of civic life: housing, education, economic opportunity, religious and cultural expression, access to public institutions and opportunities, and safety and security; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Edina does hereby affirm its commitment to human rights by declaring Edina a “Human Rights City.’ BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Edina does hereby declare December 10, 2016, and that date on every subsequent year, which is the annual anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to be “City of Edina Human Rights Day” in the City of Edina.
