for ‘sportsdome’
The Council showed interest
in the development of an
indoor turf/field recreation
facility.
At a work session prior to
the Council’s regular meet-
ing, a group of project pro-
ponents led by residents
Shannon Rusk and Paige
Rickert presented their ide-
as for development of a
seasonal “sportsdome.”
They envision a facility that
could accommodate youth
athletic associations, walk-
ers, youth recreation pro-
grams, adult sports leagues,
Edina Public Schools events
such as graduation and pep
fests, fundraisers and cor-
porate events. The facility
would measure approxi-
mately 108,000 square feet
and would be operational
26 weeks of the year.
The Council directed the
Park Board to complete a
facilities inventory to deter-
mine what is needed. If a
sportsdome is determined
to be necessary, the Park
Board will determine the
best location and whether it
should be operated by the
City, a private organization
or through a public-private
partnership.

Council approves
cooling tower relocation
The Council approved a site
plan amendment to allow
for the relocation of air con-
ditioning equipment at York
Gardens, 3451 Parklawn
Ave.
The cooling tower was not
shown on the site plan for
the new assisted living facil-
ity that was reviewed by the
Planning Commission or
City Council and was not
shown on the building per-
mit plans that were re-
viewed by staff at the time
the building permit for the
project was issued. The unit
was recently constructed.
Shortly after, staff began to
receive complaints about
the view of the cooling tow-
er and noise generated by
the unit.
The Council approved the
site plan amendment with
conditions, including a re-
quirement to install a noise
abatement device on the
unit. The owner must plant
Arborvitae to screen the
unit once it is relocated and
must excavate and land-
scape the area where the
cooling tower sits today.
It is expected that the unit
will be relocated in early
September.
