CENTENNIAL LAKES PARK: A HIDDEN GEM OF EDINA

2014 Spring/Summer Activities Directory
When one thinks of France Avenue, many
places may come to mind: hospital and
clinics, shopping centers, condominiums,
restaurants and business parks. The
stretch of France Avenue that sits
between Highway 62 and Interstate 494 is
a bustling area. Yet somehow there is still
a quiet, hidden oasis amongst the malls,
coffee shops and grocery stores.
Centennial Lakes Park opened in June 1991
after the City purchased the land — then a gravel
pit — from John Hedberg in 1988 and set out on
a first-of-a-kind mixed-used development.
After more than 22 years of operations,
the park has morphed into a vibrant year-
round facility that is not only beautiful for
people who live or work in the area, but
also provides patrons many activities along
the nearly 1.5-mile long walkway.
“There’s always something to do in the park,
no matter the season,” said Centennial
Lakes Park General Manager Tom Shirley.
Croquet, lawn bowling, putting, fishing,
paddleboating and boating with the Edina
Model Yacht Club are all summer activities
you can participate in during the warmer
weather months, not to mention the weekly
events such as Thursday’s Farmers Market
with about three dozen vendors and the
Movies in the Park at dusk on the same day.
The Centennial Lakes Park Farmers Market
runs 3 to 7 p.m. June 12 through Sept. 25.
“It’s great to see so many different groups
at Movies in the Park,” said Centennial
Lakes Park Assistant Manager Laura
Knollmaier. “We see teenagers on dates,
families, seniors who bring their own
popcorn. It’s great.”
Sunday, Monday and Wednesday concerts at
the Maetzold Amphitheater offer a variety
of musical acts while Tuesday and Thursday
afternoon children’s performances offer a
fun way to get kids outside during the day
for some fresh air and fun.
The park is also home to the Fall into the
Arts Festival, a fundraiser for the Edina
Crime Prevention Fund. To be held this year
Sept. 6-7, artists will showcase their work in
a variety of media, including photography,
sculpture, glass and more.
“The [Fall Into the Arts Festival] is very
important for the Art Center and the
Public Art Working Group as it gives both
exposure to residents and non-residents
alike,” said Art Center General Manager
Michael Frey. “Many people purchase pots
and watch the potters on the wheel and
have a relaxing moment with their families
and watch artists at work.”
Also, Centennial Lakes Park offers a great
walking trail that features some of Edina’s
finest public art pieces, unique flowers
and landscaping.
Centennial Lakes Park boasts numerous
amenities at a great value. From ice skating to
croquet, films to farmers markets, Centennial
Lakes Park is clearly the hidden gem of Edina.

www.CentennialLakesPark.com.

park features more than 1.5 miles of paved pathways meandering around a 10-acre lake
and interspersed with beautifully landscaped grounds, formal and informal seating
areas, swinging benches and fountains.
During the summer months, visitors can rent paddleboats; fish in the ponds for sunfish, bass and bullheads; watch remote-
controlled sailboat races; explore the maze or try their luck on the putting course or croquet and lawn bowling courts. The
park also hosts a variety of cultural performances in a 1,000-seat lakeside amphitheater. For a special treat, be sure to check
out the weekly Movies in the Park at sunset on Thursday evenings throughout the summer.
At the Hughes Pavilion, visitors can rent banquet space for weddings, business meetings and social events. The Pavilion also

DREAMY DAYS: SCULPTING ANIMALS
WITH REALISM, PAINTING THEM SURREAL
(Ages 13-18)
David Cahn
Lions, rhinos, tropical birds, gorillas, whales, Komodo Dragons
and more. The trick with this flavor of creation lies in our
accuracy depicting these and other animals with their real-
world anatomy. Once they look so real they might walk off, we
will add the magic touch — vibrant bold colors, all white eyes
and lush designs. Suddenly, what was once impressive yet
conventional becomes commandingly dreamy. In this 12-week
class, depending on individual speed, several sculptures will be
dreamed up, formed and painted. Maximum 8.

SURREAL VISTAS: PAINTING
ABSURD BEAUTY
(Ages 13-18)
David Cahn
Something profound happens when we realistically depict
settings and subjects whose presence in a shared context
can only be described as ridiculous. In this in-between field of
imagination, we find ourselves most in touch with the logic
and phenomena encountered in dreams. In this class, several
works will be envisioned, rendered and brought to life using
acrylic paint. Attention to composition and photo realism will
determine the visual impact of our works. Maximum 8.

images should have good balance between lights and darks,
warm and cool values, or interesting composition and clear
detail. Drawing using the sight size or comparative method is
encouraged, but our focus is on painting and means to shortcut
the drawing stage can be used when needed. This class offers

CLOUDS & WATER: PASTEL TOPICS
Laura Frykman
You’re already an artist, but you’ve always
wanted to develop more skills in painting water,
clouds, or some other tough visual challenge. Bring
your chosen topic to this class and play your way
through any mental block with demonstrations, exercises
and discussion. Even for oil and acrylic painters, taking some
time to break down your subject into its elements, values
and rhythms will breathe new life and authenticity into your
landscapes. It’s like drawing with pure pigment – but without
sacrificing the rich painterly colors you love. Pastels uniquely
convey the dance of light. No worries about oil, turp or
brushes; just bring your expressive self and a sandpaper page.
*No class June 25 or July 16. Maximum 10.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING FOR
YOUNG ADULTS — EN PLEIN AIRE
(Ages 13-21)
Louise Gillis
Experience “en plein aire” painting this summer. En plein aire
is a French expression that translates to “in the open air” and
is particularly used to describe the art of painting outdoors
working in natural light and using color to define form. Plein
aire painting is enjoying a renaissance within the United States.
The charm of traditional landscape painting combines with the
energy of the brush strokes and the magic of capturing light
and shadow. We will be painting “alla prima,” laying down a
scene with quick broad colorful brushstrokes in one session. In
the first session, we will meet indoors to learn the essentials of
landscape painting. We will then move to Rosland Park behind
the Art Center. Please request a supply list. Maximum 10.

BEGINNING DRAWING
Donna Webb
Artists are “See-ers.” They see the world around them in a
different way than the rest of us. Yet, all of us have the ability
to be “see-ers.” To learn how to draw, we must first learn to
“look” without preconceptions. We will practice this artist’s
way of looking and drawing from observation, and experiment
with a number of drawing techniques that have been used
by artists over the centuries. This class is geared towards
beginners, but is suitable for those who wish to refresh their
drawing skills or just need a class or assignment to get them
going. Bring a general purpose sketchbook, approximately
9-by-12 inches. All other materials provided. *Class held at the

techniques based on the informative contour. Using the
philosophy found in her book The Little Book of Drawing, she

LIGHTS, DRAMA, ACTION! EXPLORING
HYDRUS WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
Georgia Kandiko
Dr. Ph. Martin’s Hydrus watercolors have
magical qualities that allow a whole new range
of watercolor experiences. The colors have an
ink-like intensity. When dry, they do not lift. They are
transparent, so they layer beautifully. We will paint florals,
animals and landscapes in our explorations. Bring your Hydrus
watercolors if you have them. You may use the instructor’s
paints for a small fee, payable directly to her. Bring your own
paper, images and brushes. The instructor will also have
images for you to work from. Maximum 14.
RADIANT FLORALS WORKSHOP
David R. Smith (NEW INSTRUCTOR)
Is that really a watercolor? That’s the question
you’ll likely be asked when you learn the
techniques taught in this Radiant Florals Watercolor
Workshop. Through wet-into-wet glazes, you will be
amazed at the rich colors that will be developed and of the
success you will achieve. Also, learn a valuable technique to
allow you time to adjust colors and make corrections. It sounds
unbelievable, but with the technique taught, you will have
time to make corrections with watercolors! Participants will be
provided with a sketch to transfer from, a color reference photo
and a typed outline (so you can focus on instruction instead of

THE 3 POWERFUL ELEMENTS OF
LANDSCAPE: SHAPE, LINES, AND
TEXTURES WORKSHOP
Gail Speckmann
Shapes express “presence,” which helps the
painting view well from a distance. Each “piece”
or grouping of pieces becomes a distinct shape of
the landscape. By limiting the shapes to relatively few,
impact is strong. Lines express “movement” which at mid-
range encourages the viewer to circulate focus from one area
to another. Such “movement” provides main and secondary
paths of interest which act to unify the separate shapes of the
landscape. Textures provide us with “tactile details” creating
interest for viewing at close-up range. They intrigue, describe
and delight the eye!
In order to significantly strengthen our landscapes, we will
focus on these three elements. We contain ourselves to
working with one color of a naturally deep value so as to allow
us a full range of values (based on intensity or dilution) in a
fairly neutral color (good options are black, brown or violet).
We will create several small landscapes in order to reinforce the
ideas presented here. When this painting phase is completed,
we will then explore adding color washes and/or color overlays
to bring in varied hues.
Gail is well-known throughout the country for making the
painting process fun and engaging. She welcomes students of
varied levels of experience and styles.

SEASONS OF THE SOUL: HAUSCHKA
THERAPEUTIC WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Donna Webb
Are you curious about this method of painting? This beginning
class will start out with exercises to explore the nature of each
color and color mixing, and conclude with a series of paintings
called Seasons of the Soul, exploring the mood of each season
and its corresponding temperament within us. You begin the
painting without knowing what the final image or theme will
be as you open to your unconscious and, through the process,
allow an image to emerge. The time spent with these pure
colors and liquids is rejuvenating to the body and soul. (One
class in late July or early August will be skipped. Instructor
will notify class.) *Class held at Edina Senior Center, 5280
Grandview Square.
About Donna Webb
Donna Webb is an artist whose
works are in the permanent
collection of The Walker
Art Center, The Plains Art
Museum and numerous private
collections. She taught art
at Normandale Community
College for 10 years, at Spring
Hill Waldorf School for seven
years and privately at the Center for Wholeness.
Donna’s studies of the Hauschka Therapeutic Painting
Technique became the cornerstone of her Master’s
Thesis on Wholistic Arts, blending art therapy with
studio arts.

tearing and time. This class will focus on using healing and
cloning tools, selection tools and the eraser tool and give an

Adobe Photoshop Elements Curriculum
MASTERING THE SELECTION TOOLS IN
ADOBE PS ELEMENTS
Don Clay
The magic of Photoshop Elements flows from the selection
tools that let you isolate portions of your images in order to
apply special effects to those portions. The Marquee, Lasso,
Magic Wand and Brush tools are used to add or subtract,
move, copy, paste, delete, rotate or scale a selected area of the
image. The selection tools can be adjusted in many ways to
customize desired effects. Maximum 4.
INTRODUCTION TO LAYERS IN ADOBE
PS ELEMENTS
Don Clay
Advanced users of Photoshop Elements create layers so they
can separate the elements in an image and then move and
transform them independently of one another. A layer can be
superimposed on other layers so certain parts of the image
can be colored, blurred, distorted, drawn upon, embossed or
pixelated. Using layers is also the key skill involved in adding
frames, shadows and watermarks as well as creating a collage
of images. Prerequisite: Mastering the Selection Tools in
Photoshop Elements. Maximum 4.

MMG – MINNESOTA MOSAIC GUILD
June 26–July 30
Opening: 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 26
The world comes alive in pattern! The Edina Art Center is
pleased to host the MMG — the Minnesota Mosaic Guild — a
group with tremendous talent. This show is not to be missed!
Artists work in glass, smalti, beads, broken china,
commercial tiles and an array of found objects. Some art
is on glass and can be hung in a window for a stained glass
window appearance. There will be some three-dimensional
works as well. In the past, some artists have shown their
work on pieces of furniture.
MMG was started in 2004 to promote the art of mosaic,
foster exploration and experimentation in the media,
provide educational opportunities in mosaics and share
and celebrate the diversity of experience and knowledge
in the media. Members emerge from a multitude of
artistic backgrounds, including sculpture, art instruction,
jewelry making, graphic design and oil painting. Several
of our members are professional mosaicists whose work
can be seen throughout the Twin Cities.

or groups to participate in the Adopt-A-
Park program. Participants make a two-
year commitment during which they pick
up litter at their adopted park at least
twice a year. They also notify the City of
any safety hazards in the park.
The program is open to individuals,
families, religious or community service
organizations, neighborhood associations
and other groups. At each adopted park,
the City will provide a sign identifying the
volunteer group or individual.
For more information, call 952-826-0431.
