2013-2014 Winter ActivitiesDirectory In this issue… • Test Your Throwing Skills at the 14th-Annual Potters’ Games • Parks & Rec Department Offers Cool Winter Programs • Bring Out Your Inner Artist with the Edina Art Center’s Winter Programs • Venues for Memorable Children’s Birthday Parties EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 2013-2014 Winter Activities Directory EDINA ART CENTER’S ‘POTTERS’ GAMES’ TESTS THROWING SKILLS by Michael McGivern, Communications Intern 2 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT With the blockbuster “The Hunger Games” in theaters and Sochi, Russia, prepping for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, the Edina Art Center (EAC) is planning games of its own — the 14th-annual Potters’ Games, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20. The Potters’ Games provide a fun outlet for people of all ages to explore ways to throw clay on the wheel. Many of the participants are skilled students who have the ability to replicate the same form with precision while teaching the novice and intermediate- level participants the skills of ceramics. “It’s one of our most exciting, fun events of the year,” said EAC General Manager Michael Frey. “The [Edina Film Festival] is a fundraising event. It’s serious. The Potters’ Games is a social, bonding event where potters get together for a great time.” This daylong event, started in 2000, develops community with current EAC students while providing an open house for students of all ages to “experiment” with clay, tour the Art Center and its facilities and become a part of the “biggest little pottery department” in Minnesota. The pottery is fired in a variety of ways: high temperature gas reduction, soda atmosphere, electric oxidation, low- fire raku and mid-range electric processes. There are myriad events throughout the day, including: • a blindfold competition; • throwing with your feet instead of your hands; • team throwing in which partners work simultaneously on the wheel; • a clay quiz; • a timed event to see who can create the most pots in 10 minutes; • an exercise to see who can create the tallest pot; and • a relay in which team members go through a step-by-step process of creating a piece. The variety of different events helps solidify what the roughly 1,000 annual clay students at the EAC already know: pottery at the EAC means working in a fun, tight-knit group. “It develops camaraderie and we have participants of all skill levels,” said Pottery Studio Manager Sandra Shaughnessy. “We have people who are [at] beginning to advanced [skill levels].” Potters differ from other artists like painters because of the communal effort. “[We work] together, we throw, fire each other’s pieces and glaze together,” said EAC volunteer and Potters’ Games Founder Grace Pass. Up to 40 participants have attended the games in recent years, a perfect amount for the facilities. People of all ages are welcome. Children 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent who is registered for the event. Many pots made at the Potters’ Games are put through the process of being fired and glazed. The best works may eventually be sold at the Edina Art Fair in June or the Fall into the Arts Festival at Centennial Lakes Park in September. The proceeds benefit educational programs and facilities at the EAC. Cost for the event is $5 per person, which includes lunch. During the golf season, the Braemar Grill opens at 6 a.m. daily, offering a vast menu that includes hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, fries, tap beer and wine. RATES 27-Hole Regulation Course The 27-hole Regulation Course at Braemar includes a long, difficult nine; a shorter, somewhat easier back nine; and a scenic nine where golfers are rewarded for their accuracy. The course combines bunkers, water and large undulating greens to make it fun and challenging. Braemar and Fred Richards Executive Courses The Braemar Executive Course is a par 29 course with the longest hole measuring 326 yards and the shortest 110 yards. With its rolling greens, various water hazards and sand bunkers, the Executive Course is enjoyable and accessible to golfers of all abilities. The Richards Executive Course is a par 29 course complete with clubhouse and putting green. It offers the golfer an opportunity to decide between two different flagstick positions on each hole. This concept allows the beginning golfer a chance to take an easier approach to the hole while a more challenging route can be taken by the more experienced golfer. The longest hole measures 320 yards and the shortest measures 131 yards. For our 2014 rates, please visit our website at www.BraemarGolf.com. DREAMY DAYS: SCULPTING ANIMALS WITH REALISM, PAINTING THEM SURREAL (Ages 11-18) David Cahn Lions, rhinos, tropical birds, gorillas, whales, Komodo Dragons … the trick with this flavor of creation lies in our accuracy depicting these and other animals with their real-world anatomy. Once they look so real they might walk off, we will add the magic touch — vibrant bold colors, all white eyes and lush designs. Suddenly, what was once impressive yet conventional becomes commandingly dreamy. In this five-week class, depending on individual speed, several sculptures will be dreamed up, formed and painted. Maximum 8. SURREAL VISTAS: PAINTING ABSURD BEAUTY (Ages 11-18) David Cahn Something profound happens when we depict with realism settings and subjects whose presence in a shared context can only be described as ridiculous. In this in-between field of imagination we find ourselves most in touch with the logic and phenomena encountered in dreams. In this class, several works will be envisioned, rendered and brought to life using acrylic paint. Attention to composition and photo realism will determine the visual impact of our works. Maximum 8. Even for oil and acrylic painters, taking some time to break down your subject into its elements, values and rhythms will breathe new life and authenticity into your landscapes. We will practice this artist’s way of looking and drawing from observation and experiment with a number of drawing techniques that have been used by artists over the centuries. This class is geared toward beginners, but is suitable for those who wish to refresh their drawing skills or just need a class or assignment to get them going.
