PARK BOARD MEETING BEGAN AT 9.10 P.M. IN THE NEW SENIOR CENTER.
I. APPROVAL OF THE MAY 12, 1992 MINUTES
Bill Lord MOVED TO APPROVE THE MAY 12, 1992 MINUTES. Jim Fee SECONDED THE
MOTION. MINUTES APPROVED.
II. APPOINTEE TO COMMUNITY EDUCATION SERVICES
Mr. Kojetin indicated that it is time to reappoint a Park Board member to
the Community Education Services Board. He noted that Jean Rydell has been
the representative from the Park Board for the last six months. Mr.
Kojetin stated that he has not talked directly with Ms. Rydell about being
re -appointed, but he is assuming she has enjoyed being on the board for the
past six months. The board decided to defer this topic until the July.
meeting to see if Ms. Rydell would be interested in being reappointed to
the Community Education Services Board.
III. GOLF COURSE STATUS
Mr. Kojetin brought the Park Board up-to-date on the status of the golf
course. He indicated that the city has received the permit from the Corps
of Engineers that they have been waiting to receive for approximately three
years.
Mr. Jenkins asked if the original plan is in place? Mr. Kojetin stated
that it is pretty close to the original plan, the architect just needs to
fine tune a few areas. On July 6th there will be a financial report on all
parts of the golf course's capital improvement to the City Council.
Mr. Kojetin also indicated that the purchase of Normandale Golf Course has
been agreed on but not signed. Hopefully this will be done before July 6th
so the Park Board can look at the plan after the Braemar Inspection Tour as
well as see a plan of the new nine hole golf course. Mr. Lord asked if the
funds have been approved for the new nine holes. Mr. Kojetin indicated
that they have been approved for the nine hole but not for Normandale.
Also, there will be an expansion of the grill area and the pro shop area at
Braemar Golf Course.
Mr. Kojetin stated that hopefully by the July 6th City Council meeting
everything will be put together so an amount of what it will cost can be
given to the City Council. Then the plan can be referred back to the Park
Board. Mr. Kojetin noted that possibly all bids could be opened and
awarded by September 21st and construction could start in the fall and open
in the summer of 1994.
IV. OTHER
A. Senior Center - Ms. Weigle explained how she is in the process of
working with the different senior groups to organize a Senior Advisory
Council. This council would be made up of the groups that she works with
at the center who are presently using the different facilities that are
available. This Advisory Council would be made up of the following
groups: "Rhinestone Rockettes" tap dancing group; "Swingn' Singin'
Seniors" singing group; Bridge Group; Walking Group; Edina Senior Luncheon
Program; American Association of Retired Persons; Bowling; Golf; Softball;
Volleyball; Senior Center Treasurer; Respite and Hospice Care Program; and
Senior Volunteers.
The purpose of the Advisory Council is to advise, promote, evaluate and
make recommendations regarding program/service development coordination of
program offerings and information, and guide the development of a .
fundraising program at the Edina Senior Center as it relates to senior
citizens. The Advisory Council forum provides its members the
opportunities to network with other groups in the center, promote their
club/class activities, have an awareness of the entire community and
2
support fellow members in the exchange of ideas and problem solving. Ms.
Weigle introduced the representatives present from the Advisory Council and
each one explained their functions and activities.
Carl Carlson is the representative from the singing group "Swingn' Singin'
Seniors". There are 18 - 19 members in this group and they perform all
around the Twin Cities area. Sometimes donations are given to the group.
The "Swingn' Singin' Seniors" perform 5 - 6 times per month from September
through June.
Ms. Weigle indicated that Ella Terry has been the volunteer director of the
"Swingn' Singin' Seniors" since approximately 1973 and is very much
appreciated.
Dee Olcott, who works with the hospice program at Fairview Southdale
Hospital, is working on starting a Respite Program in conjunction with
Catholic Charities. This program is now in the development stages. The
program would consist of volunteers going to the homes of people who are
sick so that caretakers can get out of the house and go to church or
shopping, etc. This program will work in conjunction with Richfield.
Evelyn Gunn, is the representative from luncheon program "Edina Senior
Dining". Lunch is served Monday through Friday at noon and averages 30 -
35 people plus 12 carry -outs. Fifty people is the most that the program
can handle because of the small area. Evelyn also made delicious cookies
for the Park Board members.
Doris Westergren is the treasurer for the Edina Senior Center. She handles
the bank account.
Inez Vogtman, is the representative from the bowling and golf leagues.
There is a president, two vice-presidents and a treasurer for this
program. There are 28 - 30 teams and the ages vary from 55 to 90. There
are also 20 -`25 subs and they use 30 lanes. They bowl from September
through April on Tuesday afternoons at Southtown. It was asked if they
have transportation. Inez indicated that they do not have transportation
provided for them, however, they do try to carpool. This program also
works in conjunction with Richfield.
In the golf league there are 285 people and the league is full at this
time. It is a sign up situation and there are tee times blocked out for
this group. They play at the Richfield Golf Course.
There is also a softball program with four teams. The men play on Tuesday
and Thursday mornings and they really have a good time Ms. Weigle
indicated. The average age on the team is 65.
There is also a volleyball program with approximately 30 people involved.
Doraine Bingham is the representative from the tap dancing group
"Rhinestone Rockettes". This group consists of women between the ages of
60 - 80. They practice every week and have a paid accompanist. The
Rockettes perform all over the Twin Cities and also will be performing at
the variety show.
3
Polly Denison is the representative from the Bridge Group and Walking Group
and also does a little bit of everything. She makes sure people show up
for their card games and sometimes will fill in for people who are unable
to be there.
Ms. Weigle indicated there are now 1400 members. Any senior can belong to
the Senior Center for $6.00 per year. Ms. Weigle also explained that the
senior center basically runs with the help of volunteers.
Ms. Weigle also noted that there is a newsletter that goes out every
month. There are 15-20 people who volunteer 3 - 4 hours each month with
the newsletter.
Ms. Weigle also stated that each year the Senior Center has a variety show
to help raise money. The variety show this year will be held on October
2nd and the cost for the show is $3.00.
Ms. Weigle explained to the Park Board that the number one problem with the
Senior Center is the parking. There are only two handicap parking spaces
and there is no bus service. Transportation does tend to be a big
problem. There is, however, a bus to the Senior Dining every day. It was
noted that the parking situation is something that the school district has
control over.
Ms. Hinton, Adaptive Recreation Supervisor, indicated that she will be
using the group room for her exercise class. She also stated that she will
be coming up with new ideas now that new Senior Center is done.
It was noted that the old part of the building had approximately 3,400 sq.
ft. The new area has 8,000 sq. ft. Again, the seniors expressed that
parking is their biggest problem.
