These Resolutions are a small token, and we speak for the whole community on a wonderful job you both have done. You will leave some big holes to fill. MOTION CARRIED. Mr. Kojetin stated Joan Lonsbury also served five years as a Garden Council observer on the Park Board. He added that the City is working on some type of get-together or dinner for commission members some time in March or April. At that time the City will honor both of you. We will be looking forward to thanking you again for your outstanding contributions. It will leave a big gap in the park system. The Edina staff appreciated your services and hard volunteer work that you have done throughout the years in the continued growth of the parks and facilities in our system. III. 1988 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES REVIEW Mr. Kojetin the Park and Recreation Task Force could shed light on this subject. Mrs. Lonsbury said the Council has noticed that we have made goals and objectives in the past. Mr. Wineberg stated that his Task Force committee is awaiting a proposal on a study that is going to be conducted throughout the community. He met with the research individual, and Mr. Wineberg will be reporting at the Task Force meeting on Thursday. Mr. Wineberg stated the findings of that study may or may not change our goals and objectives. Mr. Christianson asked if this subject should be deferred to a later date. Mr. Kojetin said we should wait until after the Task Force has completed its study. IV. CENTENNIAL FESTIVAL REVIEW Mrs. Lonsbury said it was just wonderful. On Saturday, February 13, Mrs. Lonsbury, Mrs. Wooldridge, Mrs. Rydell, and Mr. Montgomery built a snow sculpture of the old Edina mill. Mr. Kojetin, Mr. Bach, and Ms. Peterson (Edinborough) sculpted the Edinborough arch with a park bench. The winning sculpture was a turtle, second prize went to a tennis shoe, and third prize was an igloo. All the participants were having a lot of fun. Mr. Montgomery reported on the medallion hunt. The medallion was found earlier than expected. His committee had given only five clues out of the 12 they had prepared. A man and his son who had both helped on the ice castle, found the medallion and collected the $100 prize. Mr. MacHolda reported on the success of the pony -wheel and the cutter. These rides brought in $450. Mrs. Lonsbury mentioned that a 90 -year old native Edinan, Mrs. Cardarelle, got the first ride on the antique cutter. Mr. Thayer reported that the ice was great for the speedskating. There were no entrants in the 17 and older category. The kids had a lot of fun. Mr. Bill Farrell, a volunteer speedskating expert, did a great job with the kids in getting them excited and offering support. - 2 - Mr. Keprios reported that six bandy teams played three games including a women's bandy game. He also commented on the great ice. Credit should be given to Vince Cockriel, park foreman, for the outstanding ice maintenance job. The winning bandy teams received. Centennial hats, and the runners-up received Centennial key chains. Mr. Christianson said the bonfire was a great success. The old stockade toy from the Cornelia Park playground was used as firewood which made a fantastic bonfire. Mr. Christianson said at any given time there were probably 25 to 30 people enjoying the fire. Mr. Montgomery mentioned the two winter campers, Ardythe Buerosse and a friend, who spent the whole night in the snow. One was in a tent and one was actually buried in a snowbank. The alumni hockey exhibition at Braemar Arena on Sunday, February 14, was a smashing success. Mr. Fee stated a lot of credit goes to Larry Thayer and Nancy Knudson; things were very organized. There were 115 returning hockey players in four different games. The most recent graduates had a small turnout, so they played four -man hockey. There was a nice reception after the games at Braemar Clubhouse, and John Valliere and his staff did a great job. There weren't as many players at the reception as they thought, but the ones that were there had only good things to say about the whole event. The low turnout could have been caused by the event being on a Sunday evening and Valentine's Day. Mr. Wineberg stated Mr. Kojetin and Mr. Keprios did a fantastic job on the ice castle; it is a tremendous accomplishment. Mrs. Lonsbury also thanked the park staff. She said the castle is magic, and Bob transformed the idea to a reality. Mrs. Lonsbury added that Kay Bach and Betty Hemstad (Centennial Commission) are delighted with the results. V. OTHER. Mr. Keprios said we have about one more week of outdoor ice at the skating rinks. This is one of our longest seasons. Mr. Kojetin stated we will continue our regular program of maintenance through the end of the week. Mr. Kojetin pointed out the new 1988 Park and Recreation calendars. Mr. Keprios put it together and added the calendar section and the new park map. An instructor at the Edina Art Center drew the picture on the front and redesigned the map in the center. Edina residents should start to receive their calendars this weekend. VI. ADJOURNMENT Don Wineberg MOVED TO ADJOURN AT 8:10 PM. Jean Rydell seconded the motion. MOTION CARRIED. - 3 -
