II. TEEN CENTER
Greg Hedger, director of the Teen Center, explained the information booklet. After
his explanation, he asked the Board for any questions. Mrs. Lonsbury asked if the
kids paid. Mr. Hedger said the kids pay $1 each time they go to the Teen Center.
This money does not help defray the operating expenses, but it allows the kids to do
special things i.e. rent movies, order pizza, etc. Mrs. Lonsbury then asked how much
money did the City fund last year. Mr. Hedger answered $5000. Mrs. Rydell asked if
the program is expected to grow. Greg explained it is a cyclical program. The
attendance will depend on the needs of the kids. Mr. Wineburg asked if Greg had a
profile on the kids. Greg said they are all from Edina, mostly from Southview. A
lot of kids are new in school and haven't developed social skills to be assertive in
school. John Keprios said the Teen Center does fill a void. Mr. Keprios asked when
the Teen Center will close this year. Greg said some time in May. There is no Teen
Center program during the summer months. It re -opens in the fall. Greg is asking
for funding for the next year. The funds allocated by Community Education will be
available in July. The Teen Center currently has funding to last the rest of
calendar year 1987. Greg asked the Park Board to recommend to the Council to
allocate $3000 for the year 1988.
