STAFF PRESENT: Bob Kojetin, John Keprios, Madelyn Krinke
OTHERS PRESENT: Donna Hipps
Joan Lonsbury called the meeting to order.
I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF MAY 14, 1985 MEETING
Virginia Shaw moved to approve the minutes of the May 14,
1985 meeting. Marilyn Wooldridge seconded the motion. Motion
carried.
II. VAN VALKENBURG PARK
Bob Kojetin reported that the ballfield project had to be
abandoned this year because there were large frozen chunks of
dirt 20 feet below ground which probably will not thaw until
about October. There could be a lot of settlement when the
thawing occurs, so the project won't be started until next spring
and the fields will not be available for play until 1987.
III. WOODDALE SCHOOL EDINAMITE CELEBRATION
The Edinamite celebration will take place on July 13. Glen
Smith is chairman of the celebration.
IV. EDINBOROUGH
Bob Kojetin reported that the "Edinborough" name has been
reinstated. Everything has been approved except the signing of
final documents. A large model of Edinborough is being built to
promote selling. Bob indicated that there is more emphasis being
placed on establishing an amphi theatre which would be conducive
to conduct more cultural activities.
V. GYMNASTICS
Bob Kojetin stated that the EGA study committee is working
on the feasibility of a new building as well as refurbishing of
the but with toilet facilities. There is concern that a private
organization is constructing a facility for gymnastics in the
Opus building and that may draw away from the EGA program. Our
facilities are really at the bottom of the heap right now and it
is very difficult to keep the participants. An issue that must
be dealt with is where we stand in relation to private
organizations which have money available. Where do we fit in the
picture?
VI. OTHER
A question was raised by Marilyn Wooldridge whether it is a
possibility to have a bubble put over any tennis courts in Edina.
Bob Kojetin replied that the possibility has been discussed and
it does not seem feasible for the city because of the great
expense and because bubbles are very difficult to maintain.
Bob Kojetin mentioned that the council had not approved the
sale of the park property at 66th and West Shore Drive which was
previously discussed in a Park Board meeting. The council wanted
to know more about sale of other property and would like to
establish some type of policy concerning sale of park and city
properties.
Andy Montgomery asked who is responsible to maintain the
creek and stated that there are logs in the creek. Bob Kojetin
replied that the city does. It is very difficult to get at the
trees along the creek and most of the work must be done during
the winter when the creek is frozen and trucks can be driven on
it.
Virginia Shaw inquired about how to get a boulevard tree
planted. Bob Kojetin stated that the city only has about 50
trees which are planted each year at random.
VII. RECREATION REPORT
John Keprios reported that the pool opened Saturday, June
8th. Monday, the 17th, summer activities begin. The numbers are
up in T -ball, lost a few in soccer, however the available number
of youth is down.
John stated that a teen center director has been hired and
the center will open in.September on Friday evenings and Saturday
afternoons through December.
The hockey board indicated to John that they would like to
get together with the Park Board and discuss the possibility of
one more covered arena with natural ice and to get together with
the gymnastic board.
Bob Kojetin announced that John Keprios is now the assistant
director of Park and Recreation and a new individual is being
hired for John's position.
Andy Montgomery said he was happy that Tom Lamb took the
initiative to resurrect the Town Team and expressed a wish that
the baseball board would take an interest in the program. Bob
Kojetin noted that the youth baseball association is not and
should not be in charge of that team because of the age of the
players.
VIII. BREDESEN PARK
Bob Kojetin stated that he has been working on setting up a
rededication for opening possibly on July 9, at the next Park
Board meeting. The Nine -Mile Watershed District committee
recently walked around the park which is about 95% completed now.
The path along Vernon is only 5' wide and there is talk about
making it 8' wide. Questions have been asked about signs in the
park and there have been requests for signs. Bob Kojetin
indicated that a total signage layout has been recommended and
signs are now being made and should be installed before the park
is completed.
REMINDERS:
Braemar Inspection Tour will be held on August 20. Rep. Frenzel
and the Nine -Mile Watershed District Board will be invited this
year.
Motion made by Virginia Shaw to adjourn the meeting, seconded by
Andy Montgomery. Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
