I. SENIOR CITIZENS REPORT - SUE WEIGLE
Sue Weigle reported that the membership of the Senior club now
totals 850. She mentioned a few trips which the Seniors Club had taken
recently and the plans for the future. The trips are very reasonable
for the Seniors because the Club pays for part of the expenses. Plans
also include visits to local schools and having lunch with the children
and then touring the Edina Schools. The Seniors really enjoy being with
the children.
Swingin Singers are still very active and will perform at Expo 83.
A wellness clinic will be conducted in October at no cost to the
Seniors or the City. Some of the seniors are currently participating in
a physical fitness program. A mental health program has been attempted,
but there has been only a small participation so far.
Sue also reported that the volunteer services performed by the seniors
amounts to tremendous numbers of hours of volunteer services to a signifi-
cant number of groups. Work is.dbne for the following: Heart Association,
Cancer Association, Government Center, Edina Schools, Episcopal Church,
Edinamites, Good Fellowship, Jaycees and several others. A luncheon was
recenity held and awards were given to some of the Seniors who donated many
hours of service to some of those organizations. At least 30 members donate
over 400 hours each year.
Congregate dining for the seniors serve lunches to approximately 85-90
per day. The total number of lunches which can be served is 98. The
Edina Sr. Center is one of the better congregate dining areas in the metro-
politan area.
Sue has had University Recreation students work as interns at the
Sr. Center, which also contributes more staff time and provides us with
a better opportunity to plan more things at the Sr. Center. These interns
generally work a quarter and then return to school. This last year we
have had four different interns.
Ira
Sue mentioned that we are again making arrangements for Seniors
and handicapped from around the Metro area to attend the Braemar Frolics
dress rehearsal on April 21, which is the day before opening performance.
May is older Americans Month. Joan Lonsbury asked if a display could
be placed in the library for this occasion.

UNANIMOUSLY.

nominated George Warner. Marilyn Wooldridge SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION
CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Committees will remain the same for next year:
Golf committee - Mack Thayer, Don Wineberg; Edinburgh Park - Doug King
and Bill Lord.
IV. CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT AND REPAIR - FUTURE
Bob Kojetin suggested that the Park Board members be aware and look
at the different parks for future improvement and repair which may need
to be done. Ideas by individual members could be considered in the future.
Don Wineberg, while traveling around the U.S., has noticed the tremendous amount
of volleyball courts and participation around the other parts of the country
and recommended that maybe we should consider volleyball courts to be built
in some of the parks as there seems to be a high demand for this type of
recreation.
Bob Kojetin also mentioned that we are looking into ways that we could
shut off the heat in the warming houses during the months of October and
November and also after the 15th of February, which is generally when we
lose our ice and close the warming houses. These houses, during the .
fall and spring months, are not used but the heat is turned down to 550
so as to not have the plumbing freeze. We are looking into a way to shut
off the water and blow out the pipes.
V. OTHER
Bob Kojetin mentioned that he had met with Jack Moran and the Chief of
Police. The council had approved that the race Jack Moran had requested
be looked into and Mr. Moran be given an account of expenses anticipated
so that there would be no cost to the city and if so accepted the race
association would bear all costs.
Bob Kojetin also reported that the council voted to have no drinking
of alcoholic beverages in any park in Edina. This means that drinking of
alcoholic beverages at the Golf Course and at the Golf dome will be con-
fined only to the building and no beer drinking outside these buildings.

Joan Lonsbury reported that the Garden Club has planted the flower
seeds for this year. The Garden Clubs in the past have donated all of the
seeds and the potting soil and the containers for the flowers that are planted
in the parks. They also plant the seeds, transplant the new plants to pots,
and transplant the plants into the ground. Last year the Garden Clubs volun-
teered approximately 517 hours to perform this service for the City of Edina.
VI. RECREATION REPORT
Rick Jacobson reported on his experiences traveling with the bandy team
to Sweden in October of last year and showed pictures of the bandy facilities
and the game that was held in Skovde, Gunnar Fasts' hometown.
