Fire crews arrived to discover a working fire in the home’s chimney, as well as the walls and attic near the chimney. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and contain the damage to that area of the home. One firefighter sustained a minor injury while extinguishing the fire. Fire Marshal Jeff Siems said combustible materials in the chimney, coupled with extensive heat from use of the fireplace, likely caused the fire. “Now is a good time to get your wood-burning fireplace cleaned and inspected,” said Siems. A certified chimney sweep will inspect your masonary, flue liner, chimney cap and venting system to make sure everything is clean and up to code. Doing so greatly decreases the odds of having a chimney fire, said Siems. Siems also reminds residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms and to test their smoke alarms monthly as well as replace the batteries twice a year. The Edina Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department received mutual aid from the Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park fire departments.
