Edina Recognizes Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month
with ‘Days of Remembrance’
Edina, Minn., March 26, 2015 – The City of Edina Human Rights & Relations Commission (HRRC) holds
an annual Days of Remembrance event in conjunction with the state-recognized Genocide Awareness and
Prevention month each April. To mark Edina’s fifth-annual Days of Remembrance observance, the HRRC will
host “Days of Remembrance: From the Armenians to the Holocaust” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at
Edina City Hall in partnership with World Without Genocide.
“The City of Edina is committed to remembering those who perished and to protecting human rights for all
people. Edina’s Days of Remembrance event, initiated by a local resident, aims to raise awareness and
understanding for those whose lives and cultures have changed forever as a result of the Holocaust and other
genocides,” said HRRC Chair Jan Seidman. “The goal of the annual event is also to encourage our residents to
reflect and act on the need for respect of all people.”
This year, the City will hold a special event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide
and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust. The program will feature a
presentation from World Without Genocide Executive Director Ellen J. Kennedy on Holocaust and genocide
denial. Holocaust survivor Dora Eiger Zaidenweber will share her personal story of her family’s incarceration
in a Polish ghetto, imprisonment at Auschwitz, transfer to Bergen-Belsen and liberation. Copies of her book
Sky Tinged Red will be available for purchase. A performance of the play “Upstanders: Saving Armenians and
Jews” will tell the story of courageous Armenians who fled from Europe during the Armenian genocide and
then paid it forward to save victims and survivors during the Holocaust.
The event is free and open to the public. Continuing education credit is available for teachers and lawyers: 2.0
educator clock hours; $35 for standard continuing legal education credits (pending review and certification).
Registration is not required in advance.
