Increase Awareness to Prevent Theft
Edina, Minn., April 30, 2015 – In an effort to prevent burglaries and thefts this year, the Edina Police
Department is encouraging residents to increase their awareness and take a few extra steps to avoid becoming
a victim of these crimes.
In the last five weeks, there have been a total of nine burglaries. Five were from single-family residences
currently under construction. Two instances were attempted burglaries, with no entry into the home. Three
occurred on the west side of Edina, with the remainder on the east side of Minnesota Highway 100.
According to Crime Prevention Specialist Molly Anderson, part of the spike in these types of crimes can be
attributed to the warm weather when more people are outdoors and construction or rehabilitation projects
increase.
The Police Department recommends the following things to keep homes secure:
Always lock your garage and invest in quality deadbolts for service doors.
Remove garage remotes and other valuables from vehicles and lock vehicles when left unattended.
Don’t leave anything outside or unattended where it could be easily taken.
Due to the challenge in securing a home under construction, Anderson said that awareness is the greatest
deterrent. “We urge residents to call 9-1-1 whenever they see something out of the ordinary,” she said.
To prevent residential bicycle thefts, Anderson reminds residents to keep their bikes in their locked garages
when not in use. When leaving a bike unattended, secure the frame and both wheels to a stationary object, such
as a bike rack, post or fence. She also suggests recording the serial number of the bicycle, so it can be easily
identified if lost or stolen.
Specific suspicious activity to watch for includes unknown persons looking into or tampering with cars, walking
into backyards or garages and peering into windows, and vehicles slowly “cruising” around neighborhoods. To
