Edina Police remind residents to remove valuables, lock vehicles
Edina, Minn., May 22, 2015 — Due to an increase in thefts from autos around the city, the
Edina Police Department reminds residents to take preventive measures.
Follow the tips below to protect your property and keep safe:
Park only in brightly lit lots and ramps.
Good lighting and the presence of people will reduce your vulnerability to other types of crimes
also.
Have your keys out when walking to your car.
Fumbling in your purse or pockets for your keys makes you an easy target.
Lock your car as soon as you are inside and as soon as you exit your vehicle.
Never leave valuables of any kind on seats or in a visible place inside your vehicle.
Thieves know that briefcases and gym bags often contain wallets, checkbooks or jewelry.
Lock packages and other items in the trunk before you arrive at your destination.
It’s important to do this before you arrive at your destination, because a thief may see you put
your valuables in your trunk otherwise.
At home, keep your garage doors closed and all doors to the home and garage locked.
Be sure external doors to the home are sturdy and have good deadbolts.
If parking outside, remove the garage door opener from your vehicle.
Report all suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1 immediately.
Give a description of anyone you see prowling around or peering into cars.
“By practicing these strategies, quite often you can spare yourself the frustration and
inconvenience of being a victim of this type of crime,” said Sgt. Nate Mendel.
Since the thefts aren’t isolated to one area, the Edina Police Department has increased
overnight patrol to include more unmarked squads and bicycles throughout the City. For more
