Braemar Golf Course Acknowledged for Environmental Quality
Edina, Minn., May 26, 2015 – Braemar Golf Course has retained its status as a “Certified Audubon
Cooperative Sanctuary” through its continued commitment to enhance wildlife habitat and protect
environmental quality.
Braemar Golf Course, 6364 John Harris Drive, last achieved sanctuary status in 2004, and is one of 907
courses in the world currently granted the certification through the practice of preserving and enhancing
wildlife habitat, as well as protecting natural resources within their land. Maintenance Operations Coordinator
Bob Atol spearheaded the recertification effort.
“A lot of people view [golf courses] as not environmentally friendly, and [Braemar Golf Course] wanted to
show people we are,” said Atol. “We have a variety of projects.”
Braemar Golf Course has accomplished several eco-friendly projects for habitat improvements, as well as
maintained a strong water quality and chemical use reduction program. These conservation practices benefit
the golfers, area residents and environment.
"Braemar Golf Course has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be
commended for preserving the natural heritage of the area by protecting the local watershed and providing a
sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Tara Pepperman, Director of Cooperative Sanctuary
Programs at Audubon International.
The Audubon International recertification process is every three years, and evaluates a golf course’s ability to
effectively maintain a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas. These categories include
environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction and
safety, water conservation and water quality management.
“It’s been 100 percent Bob’s project, since day one. It was his initiative and his efforts,” said Tom Swenson,
Superintendent of Braemar. “It’s more of a personal goal and an effort on behalf of the City for Bob.”
Braemar offers customers 27 regulation holes, two 9-hole executive courses, a pro shop, driving range,
practice putting green, indoor golf dome, banquet and meeting rooms and other amenities. Tee times are
available from sunrise to sunset and vary, due to weather.
