You meet so many people,” said Nord, Past President and member of the Club since 1981. “We have roughly 300 members, so you’re meeting a variety of people with a variety of talents. It’s just a great experience.” After celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2014, it’s no secret that Braemar Golf Course is the hot spot for many Edina golfers. In addition to catering to day- to-day players, Braemar is also home to more than 15 golf leagues, including the Men’s Club. EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 2015 Spring/Summer Activities Directory Founded just after Braemar Golf Course first opened in 1964, the Men’s Club is still driving traffic to the course with its six different league-play programs, in addition to special events and tournaments. The Men’s Club is the biggest league that is hosted at Braemar Golf Course and offers more than 10 programs and tournament opportunities to members. “We have something for everyone,” said Jim Platt, a member for 23 years and current member of the Men’s Club Board of Directors. Gene Nord’s son, Tim, joined the Club in 2012 and said he has been really happy with how easy is has been for him to find a group of people with whom to play. He said, “I’ve felt that everyone involved is very welcoming and helpful,” a point of focus for the Club going forward. While the Club offers many different options for men of all playing abilities ages 18 and older, it’s the commitment to Braemar Golf Course that makes the community so close-knit. “It is great to have such an active and engaged Men’s Club as well as all the other leagues and associations we have here at Braemar,” said Braemar Golf Course General Manager Joe Abood. “I look forward to working with them in the future as we create the next chapter for Braemar and the City of Edina.” The Club reserves the Course during the less-popular times of the week and guarantees members the ability to play without the hassle of having to schedule their own tee times. For example, if you are in the Tuesday program, you will be able to play on Tuesdays without having to call ahead and make a reservation. “We have a lot of people who are very dedicated to Braemar … this is our course,” said Gene Nord. “Braemar’s management in the past has been very cooperative working with the Braemar Men’s Club as they have with all the other leagues.” Bob Gleason, who joined the club for the first time last year, has had a great experience and says it’s safe to say he will be involved for many years to come. “There’s a place for everybody and multiple things to do. There’s a lot of opportunity,” he said. “It’s a really good combination of competitive golf and social golf and I think the biggest benefit is that there’s a really wide variety of different events and activities that would fit any golfer.” According to Men’s Club Board Member and Thursday Men’s League Coordinator Mike Casserly, there isn’t a better facility in the area to play or learn to play golf. In addition to the Men’s Club, Braemar Golf Course hosts a number of other leagues that offer a variety of golf options from mixed play to a twilight women’s league. With the closing of Fred Richards Executive Golf Course, Men’s Club member of three years Steve Olsonoski says that Braemar has a unique opportunity to welcome a whole new group of players. “All of our leagues are great,” said Facility Coordinator Mary Wooldridge. “Leagues are designed to provide a competitive — yet fun — golf environment for golfers all skill levels. [They] are a wonderful way to play golf each week with current friends and with possible new friends!” Abood encourages all golfers to visit Braemar Golf Course and find out which league is the best fit. Short-cuts, tips and tool-use at the wheel will be shared through demo after demo. Participants are welcome to take photos and encouraged to bring notebooks. A discussion about glazes will take place during the workshop, as requested. BvG glaze recipe sheets and firing slips for cone 6 oxidation and cone 8-9-10 gas and salt/soda wood firing slips will be provided to each participant. A selection of Bill van Gilder’s potter’s hand-tools (van Gilder Clay Tools), a sampling of his current work and copies of his DVDs will be available for participants to purchase. A professional potter for more than 45 years, Bill van Gilder began his clay work at age 15 as a studio apprentice to the late Byron Temple. During the following years, he apprenticed in Ireland and England, and received a degree from Harrow School of Art in London. He then established and managed two large pottery training centers in Southern Africa (Lesotho and Swaziland) under the auspices of The World Bank. Bill returned to the United States in 1979 and established a studio and craft gallery atop South Mountain in central Maryland, which he continues to operate today. Bill has served on the faculty of The Art League, Alexandria, Virginia, and was founder/director of The Frederick Pottery School in Frederick, Maryland. He currently leads workshops nationally and internationally on pottery forming, decorating and firing techniques, as well as workshops on kiln-building. Bill has designed a line of professional potter’s tools (van Gilder Clay Tools) available online and through retailers nationwide. Bill also wrote a regular “Teaching Techniques” column for Clay Times (USA) Magazine, and was the creator, writer and host of “Throwing Clay,” an internationally televised DIY Network Television 30-part series about making pottery. This unpredictability is perhaps the best part about the wood-firing method! Class participants will meet with the instructor approximately every-other week at the Edina Art Center for both lectures on the process of wood firing and demonstrations. When the instructor is not present, the classroom will be reserved for the students. Students will bisque and glaze their work at the Art Center. In the final three weeks, the participants will carpool to meet at Spates’ studio in Hudson, Wisconsin, for the hands-on experience of loading, firing and unloading his multi-chamber wood kiln! This class is designed for the intermediate through advanced student level and requires the ability to perform some outdoor physical labor. The firing and stoking schedule will be discussed during the class, but will involve the last three weekends of the class (June 13-14, 20-21 and 27). Maximum 10. Argentine Tango is now being practiced in many cities all over the world, including Minneapolis. During this class, students will explore a different facet of screen printing on fabric: the unpredictable, the intuitive and the “happy accident.” Grabowski will show students how to use fiber reactive dyes and techniques for deconstructed printing, discharge and polychromatic printing while they experiment with the silkscreen as a painting and monoprinting tool. The techniques are simple; the results can be breathtaking in their beauty and complexity. The resulting fabric may be used as an end in itself or a point of departure for further embellishment. While the workshop is geared toward fabric, all techniques and materials work on good printmaking papers as well. No previous experience is required. Deconstructed screenprinting is a process using simple removable textures such as bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, various leaves and other low-relief textures. The screen is placed on the texture (any textured surface, such as wrinkled paper), and a preliminary print is pulled, transferring the texture to the screen. The dye is left in the screen to dry, textured object is removed and screen is printed using sodium alginate (dye thickener) to release the dye. As the dye becomes wetter, more dye is released onto the fabric allowing for a series of up to six monoprints. Bio Kerr Grabowski is known for her innovative approaches to dyeing and screening processes. Her background in drawing, printmaking and design is evident in her elegantly whimsical artwear. Kerr developed and enhanced the deconstructed screen printing process to make it her own. Deconstructed screen printing is a printing/monoprint technique allowing for a freer, more painterly approach to screen printing. A NJ Arts and Mississippi Arts Commission fellowship recipient, Kerr is widely published including Ornament, Fiber Arts, Surface Design Journal, Fiber Arts Design Book Six, Silk Painting for Fashion and Fine Art and Textiles Now. She exhibits and teaches workshops internationally and has produced two DVDs, “Deconstructed Screen Printing” and “Adventures in Surface Design.” Kerr Lives in Bay St Louis, Mississippi. Kerr’s work can be viewed online at www.kerrgrabowski.com. “Much of my work in textiles and clothing stems from an interest in cultures where art is an integral part of daily life-where mark making is a natural activity, a part of the celebration of being,” she said. 672015 SPRING/SUMMER ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY YOUTHTECH INC.
