Murals and plaques illustrate the Arena’s past. For some, Braemar Arena is a place to play and watch hockey. For others, it is a place to figure skate for fun or competition. But for all who enter the spacious complex, it’s a place of character, smiling faces and a great time. The Village of Edina constructed Braemar Arena with one sheet of ice in 1965, after solidifying an agreement with nine school districts in the Lake Conference, the Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club and the youth hockey program. The Arena was the sixth indoor refrigerated ice arena EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 2015 Fall Activities Directory in the Twin Cities, serving as the home rink for all Lake Conference games. “The Minneapolis City of Lakes Figure Skating Club (now the Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club) was asked to relocate to the newly built Braemar Arena in Edina,” said President of the Braemar- City of Lakes Figure Skating Club Sharon Friedli-Welter. “Braemar Arena is home. Generations of skaters now bring their children back to Braemar Arena to figure skate and play hockey.” Braemar Arena has undergone several additions over the years. “The Arena has made many improvements and additions since its beginning, but with every improvement, it has been important to maintain the character, the original feel,” said General Manager Susie Miller, who has worked for Edina for 17 years. The Pavilion — better known as “the Pav” — was built in the early ‘70s. It was constructed with tin walls for use in the winter. It served as a community gathering place in the summer, when it was transformed into an open pavilion. The Pavilion took its final form in 1987 as an enclosed, indoor arena — known today as the East Arena. “I recall coaching my kids and others on both girls’ and boys’ youth teams for the entire decade of the 1990s,” said former President of the Edina Hockey Association and current board member of the Edina Historical Society Bruce Carlson. “I continue to be reminded of how blessed we are as a community to have such an incredible facility, that has now grown to four rinks.” The South Arena was constructed in 1997 to accommodate growing programs. In 2012, the Hornets Nest opened after $800,000 in donations was raised by the community. The most recent addition to Braemar Arena is the Backyard Rink, which was completed last year. “The City of Edina is extremely fortunate to have a facility like Braemar Arena. Since it was originally built 50 years ago, Braemar has remained one of the premier ice arenas in the state,” said current President of the Edina Hockey Association Mike DeVoe. “Having such a great facility at our disposal has most certainly been a contributing factor to Edina’s hockey success. Braemar Arena is a special place that holds a lot of great memories for a long list of talented teams and players over the last 50 years.” Braemar Arena will celebrate its 50th anniversary through a variety of events. A few highlights include an Edina Historical Society exhibit illustrating the Arena’s eventful history from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Nov. 26. On Saturday, Dec. 5, all four high school teams will play from 1 to 9 p.m. There will also be youth games and alumni scrimmages throughout the day. The Figure Skating Club’s annual holiday show will be held 4–6 p.m. Dec. 6. “The history and legacy of those before us has created such an incredible atmosphere for any hockey fanatic, player or fan,” said Edina native Dean Williamson. “We will never forget all the memories and life-long friends we made along the way.” For more information, contact Miller at 952-833-9502 or visit www.BraemarArena.com. The redesigned range is more than 300 yards long and will accommodate up to 58 golfers at one time. New target greens will be added and a new irrigation system will improve turf conditions and will reduce maintenance and repairs by staff. The Executive Course has been redesigned and rerouted to offer nine par 3 holes with yardages ranging from 72 yards to 191 yards. To make the course more enjoyable for kids and entry-level golfers, the course has been reconfigured to minimize sand hazards and forced carries over wetlands. All of the greens, tees and bunkers will be reconstructed and the fairways will be re-grassed to improve turf quality and to provide a more consistent experience for golfers. The proposed greens have been enlarged to allow for two flags on each green — similar to the experience at Fred Richards Executive Golf Course. The improvements are scheduled to be complete next spring. 840 840 840 840 840 840 840 84 084 0 84 0 840 840 84 0 840 840 840 840 840 840 84 0 840 840 840 840 840 850 850 85 0 850 850 850 8 5 0 850 850 850 850 85 0 850 850 850 860 860 86 0 860 860 86 0 860 860 860 860 870 87 0 870 870 870 870 87 0 870 87 0 87 0 880 88 0 88 0 880 880 880 880 880 880 890 89 0 890 89 0 890 890 890 890 890 890 90 0 90 0 900 900 9 1 0 910 91 0 91 0 910 92 0 92 0 920 92 0 930 860 84 0 850 86 0 890 900 846.8 837.2 842.8 839.1 851.2 841.5 935.0 858.4 869.1 855.1 845.4 845.5 848.5 847.1 844.8 848.6 847.8 847.1848.4 848.5 845.3 841.7 845.1 847.3 849.3 864.4 849.5 844.2 W 850.5 841.2 842.8 844.5 W 842.6 848.9 850.7 841.8 841.7 843.2842.8 859.5 861.6 862.4 863.3 874.9 865.5 898.2844.9 846.5 842.9 848.5 842.4 855.6 891.3 890.6 876.4 862.1 864.8 841.2 842.4 850.3 836.7 838.8 841.9 836.4 W W 837.6 840.7 839.3 854.7 842.4 847.7 838.5 843.0 839.1 844.2843.0 846.4 848.8 850.5 856.2 843.2 848.7 843.5 842.6 842.5 838.7 840.3 839.8 W 84 1 .8 839.4 842.6 842.4 837.8 842.0 840.3 842.6 840.8 841.0 835.6W 842.2 839.5 841.3 840.9 837.8 842.4 840.7 841.0 839.2 835.6 835.6 W W 848.6 843.4 842.2 840.4 853.2 835.6 839.7 W 916.6 847.1 929.5 894.2 930.8 930.1 840.9 842.9 847.1 870.9 841.5 842.2 841.7 839.8 850.5 848.2 848.5 841.3 838.7 843 .0 838.3 840.4 844.3 839.7 839.1 882.6 867.2 843.3 844.6 841.2 848.9 861.9 863.6 860.6 842.9 838.9 859.4 887.5891.0 890.6 893.1 900.6886.3 890.5 87 3 .5 862.5 906.3 86 7 .7 938.5 874 .6 846 .8 856.5 867.7 846.4 W 852.3 870.5 845.0 848.7 850 840.54 Bra e m a r Blv d . 1 10 Storage &Ball Washer 21 7 0 yds 100 yds 150 yds 200 yds 250 yds 300 yds 350 yds 1 3 190 158 108 2 3 164 150 136 3 3 117 98 80 4 3 120 105 75 5 3 158 136 115 6 3 127 111 88 7 3 178 152 95 8 3 123 103 84 9 3 189 160 116 Practice Range and 9-Hole Par 3 Golf Course Improvements Braemar Golf Course6364 John Harris DriveEdina, Minnesota 55439 (952) 903-5750 © This plan and the concepts represented herein are the property of Herfort Norby Golf Course Architects. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” container full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze color and surface. For Intermediate Oil & Pastel Painters Laura Frykman Let’s start by painting outdoors as long as the Minnesota weather allows! All levels are welcome. We will start from thumbnail sketches and learn the steps to build up a composition of layers on sandpaper — using colors, rhythm and texture to create a lively surface. Emphasis will be on simplifying shapes, control of values and depth so your work is clear, vivid and has a compelling presence. Instruction is a combo of demos and individualized help. If you choose, paint alongside Laura, step by step. When it gets too cold, we’ll move indoors and learn how to finish a good start without making it look like a photo. Must have a portable easel. You’ll have fun, and learn a lot from the others in class, too! Supply list available online under “class description.” Maximum 10. FOCUS ON FLOWERS For Intermediate Pastel & Oil Painters (Ages 14 to Adult) Laura Frykman Look closely at a single bloom and you have a potential autobiography, landscape, dance sequence or personal portrait all there at your fingertips! Your interpretation is everything, but how do you capture a realistic likeness quickly and still personalize the piece? These are the challenges we’ll explore in this class for chalk pastel artists, from beginners on up. You can expect to learn how to use big value shapes to create a compelling composition, use artist’s sandpaper to build up layers, create lost-and-found edges, show light reflecting off or shining through petals, use textures and alternate cool/warm colors for a surface that sings! You will capture movement in the unfolding of life and light with sketches and at least one finished pastel painting. Laura uses individualized coaching, group exercises and optional demos. With flowers as our subject, we can’t help but enjoy the journey! Supply list found online under “class description”. *No class Oct. 6. We will fire on Saturday in the Cone 6 electric kilns and then on Sunday, we will discuss the results when they are unloaded from the kiln. The workshop will also be a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on, but not limited to, Cone 6 glazes. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles, as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. This will lead us into some basic classifications of glazes, like ash, celadon and temmoku. It will be conducted in a casual question-and-answer format that will drive the content of the weekend. Glazes will be discussed in a practical and easy-to-understand dialogue designed to help potters gain an understanding of glazes, firing and glazing. We will discuss how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve them, how to adjust your glazes and how to find new ones. We will discuss glazes from John’s new book, The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cone 4-7, but will go into more detail than the book allowed.
