Make the most of Minnesota’s long winters
by getting out of the house and staying
active. Whether you prefer to embrace
the outdoors or stay warm indoors, Edina
Parks & Recreation offers something for
everyone to do this time of year.
“We want to encourage people to get out
and get moving,” said Parks & Recreation
Assistant Director Susan Faus. “It is
important to stay active, even during the
winter.”
Outdoor ice rinks are among the most
popular winter activity destinations, with
12 located around the city.

Each year as the weather permits,
the rinks are flooded and maintained
throughout the skating season. Every
rink is lit and accompanied by a warming
house. Hours are 4 to 9:30p.m. Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday. There are
special hours on holidays and non-school
days. In addition, Braemar’s Backyard
outdoor rink will host open skating Friday
evenings from 8 to 9:30 p.m.
The largest sheet of ice in Edina can be
found at Centennial Lakes Park, a 10-acre
lake that is groomed daily. Complementing
the rink is a cozy, rink-side warming
house, complete with indoor and outdoor
fireplaces, restrooms, concessions and
skate rental. There is no admission charge
for skating.
Other outdoor activities residents can
enjoy during the winter are cross-country
skiing and snowshoeing on the groomed
1.7- and 1.19-mile-long trails at Braemar
Golf Course. The trails are free to use,
but equipment is not available for rent.
For those looking to keep their golf skills
strong during the off-season, Braemar
Golf Dome is nearby. The Tin Fish
restaurant at the Golf Course clubhouse
remains open year-round.
Also nearby is Braemar Field, an artificial
field that is domed from November
through April. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Saturdays, take part in Family Night under
the dome, where participants can run laps,
play in the open field or take turns in the
batting cages.
“There is something for everybody to
do in our system of parks,” said Parks &
Recreation Director Ann Kattreh. “There
are indoor and outdoor activities for
adults, kids and families, indoor athletic
facilities, trails, rinks and many more
options for staying active.”
For those who prefer to stay inside, there
are plenty of indoor activities available to
residents during the winter. Edinborough
Park, one of the metro’s premiere indoor
parks, offers multiple indoor activities for
all ages with its 82-degree swimming pool,
1/16-mile track and children’s playground,
Adventure Peak. All amenities are
available with a daily admission fee.
All of the City’s parks are maintained
throughout the winter, with removal of
snow from trails, making the walking
paths accessible year-round. Each park
has a shelter building, which is available
for rent and makes a great place to host a
birthday party, reunion and more.
“We want people to take advantage of
everything the City has to offer in every
season,” said Faus.

You must create a new account before
registering for any program.
CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY
All refund requests will be assessed a
$5 administrative fee. Full refunds are
given only when a program or reservation
is canceled by the Parks & Recreation
Department. No refunds will be given for
cancellations requested less than five
business days prior to the start of a program
or reservation. Under the discretion of the
Parks & Recreation Director, partial credit
will be considered if cancellation is due to
injury or serious illness.
CONFIRMATION
A Registration Confirmation will be emailed to
you at the time your registration is processed.
If the program is full, you will be given the
option of being placed on a waiting list.
FINANCIAL AID
Several civic organizations have contributed
to the Edina Challenge Fund at the Edina
Community Foundation, which supports the
Grant-In-Aid Program. The program provides
assistance to individuals who cannot afford
registration fees. For more information, please

participating, spectating, using facilities
or attending a program conducted or
sponsored by the City of Edina Parks &
Recreation Department. The following

and enjoyable activities for all participants:

spectators and City staff.
• Take direction from City staff.
• Refrain from using abusive or
foul language.
• Refrain from causing bodily harm
to self, City staff or others.
• Refrain from damaging
equipment, supplies or facilities.

PARK BOARD MEETINGS
The Edina Parks & Recreation Department welcomes
any suggestions regarding City of Edina programs
and facilities. The Park Board meets at 7 p.m. on the
second Tuesday of each month. These meetings are
open to the public.
HEARING ASSISTANCE/ACCESSIBILITY
Sign language interpreters are available to help residents who are deaf or hard of hearing participate in City of Edina activities and meetings. Some programs, meetings and special events also are equipped with a hearing assistance system. For information, call Amanda Clarke at 952-826-0433.

PARENT/CHILD CLASS
Ages 3-Kindergarten
This class is for the young skater who is apprehensive
and would like mom or dad alongside on the ice.
GROUP SKATING LESSONS
Braemar Arena offers skating lessons for beginners
through advanced skaters, ages 3 through adult. We use
the United States Figure Skating (USFS) and USA Hock-
ey Basic Skills Program to determine skating levels. Our
instructors are professionally accredited from the USFS.

JUNIOR WINTER DEVELOPMENT
Ages 8-18
The Junior Development program is designed for Junior
players who want to take their game to the next competitive
level.
Players will focus on their fundamentals with the goal of
developing repeating swings. Video analysis using the V1
Coaching System will help students compare their swings to the
pros and allow them to visually identify areas for improvement.
The group will compete in short-game challenges and full-
swing competitions. Players will also be evaluated for their
golf fitness and provided with strengthening exercises.
The program is taught by Roger Fahrenkrug, PGA member
and Braemar Golf Instructor for 20 years. Roger has
experience teaching all levels of Juniors, including several
Minnesota Junior PGA champions, as well as other Minnesota
PGA professionals and amateur golfers of all skill levels.
The fee includes five private lessons, nine one-hour supervised
group sessions, practice aids and a learning manual. Classes
are limited to six students per hour. To register, contact Roger

Soccer Shots Mini is a high-energy program introducing
children to fundamental soccer principles, such as using
your feet, dribbling and the basic rules of the game.
Through fun games, songs and positive reinforcement,
children will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer
and being active.

SOCCER SHOTS SPORTS CAMPS
Soccer Shots is the national leader in youth soccer development
for children ages 2 to 8. The program has been created under
the guidance of childhood education specialists, MLS and USL
professional soccer players, and experienced and licensed soccer
coaches. Innovative lesson plans are developmentally appropriate
and tailored specifically to the three distinct age groups. Using
these creative and age-appropriate curricula and infusing each
lesson plan with enthusiasm and structured activity, Soccer Shots
aims to leave a lasting, positive impact on every child served.

Friday mornings with your preschoolers just
got better! Stages Theatre Company is thrilled
to offer a new six-week class at Edinborough Park
for your favorite preschool-aged child (ages 3-5).
Each book-themed class begins with parent/caregiver
participation, then evolves into play creation with
students and teaching artists (while parents enjoy their
morning coffee or a walk around the track), and ends with
a performance of the story for parents. Pre-registration

The Centennial Lakes Winter

DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND REFLECTIONS ON CARVING CLAY TILES
Deb LeAir
Clay Artist Deb LeAir has been creating art in some form or another since
she took her first ceramics course in high school in the 1970s. She has been
a full-time artist since 1996 when she started her own business creating a unique
style of hand-carved clay. She has exhibited and sold her work at art festivals across
the country and at select galleries. Her work has been published in magazines, books and
newspapers. Deb received her bachelor’s degree in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin
— Eau Claire and her master’s degree in Ceramics from the University of Michigan — Ann Arbor.
She currently resides in Saint Paul.
This workshop will focus on carving the surfaces of three-dimensional tiles and the use of
terra sigillata as a surface treatment. This workshop includes instruction on the rolling of
slabs and cutting and drying techniques. There will be discussion on carving tile, how designs are developed, and the use of terra
sigillata. We will also discuss the use of washes and glaze as a final treatment. Workshop participants will spend 1.5 hours carving
and discussing how to complete the tile when dry under the instruction of Deb. The clay tile will be provided by the Art Center.
Participants need to bring Kemper mini ribbon tools
(a triangle, a flat top and a circle, at least) and a bamboo
brush. Tools will also be available for purchase during the
workshop. Maximum 25.

ARTIST STUDIO FIELD TRIP WITH MEL JACOBSON
Visit Mel Jacobson’s studio, learn about his lengthy relationship with art and clay, and share
his wisdom! Mel, a graduate of the old West High School in Minneapolis, concluded his
education with a master’s degree in painting from the University of Minnesota.
His teaching career began in Ely, Minnesota. He returned to the Twin Cities and began
teaching at Hopkins Public Schools. He built his program into one of the finest high school
ceramics programs in the nation. Named one of the outstanding ceramic educators in
America by New York University and Studio Potter magazine, at the height of Mel’s career,
he was teaching six ceramic classes a day, attended by 185 students. He retired from
Hopkins in 1992 after 34 years of teaching.
The 1980s were marked by three trips to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where Mel helped establish an art center for
expatriate oil families. Several solo exhibits were held at the Dubai International Art Center.
Additionally, Mel was an adjunct professor of art at the University of Wisconsin for 16 years. Teaching at Pigeon
Lake summer art camps was the start of his ideas for adult shared learning. This program has now flourished at
his Hay Creek Studio Camp on his farm in Wisconsin. As director, he has made a place for professional artists and
teachers to gather each summer and share ideas in art, ceramics, craft and theory.
Mel maintains a full-time studio in Minnetonka. He fires in a 45-cubic-foot “Minnesota Flat Top” kiln using
traditional functional forms and glazes at stoneware temperatures. Sales are held at the studio several times
each year. Mel continues to make pots and paint at a steady rate, and does custom work for churches and private
collectors. Maximum 10.

have taken the updraft kiln class in the past or who want
support while they fire the kiln independently. Students

for independently firing the kiln if they participate in all

“Focus” is more than just a photographic term. This
artistically and technically based class is aimed at
fine-tuning a student’s photography skills to feel more
comfortable doing creative work and developing a
photographic eye. Students will become comfortable with
their DSLR (or film) camera by understanding camera
settings such as ISO, white balance, exposure meters,
depth of field and the interaction between shutter speeds
and apertures (f-stop). Bring a manually adjustable
camera and user’s manual to the first class. Maximum 8.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS

Want to learn more about a digital camera? How to get
better pictures by moving beyond the “auto” mode?
We’ll also look at how to protect and preserve the photos
students take. Students should bring their camera with
fully charged batteries and user’s manual. Maximum 6.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY ADVANCED

Learn to take better pictures under more challenging
conditions. We’ll look at adjusting daylight and flash exposure
by using “program,” “shutter preferred” and “aperture
preferred” modes. We’ll study different flash options, setting
camera sensitivity (ISO) and white balance, using the zoom
lens, focusing on difficult subjects, depth of field and using
the self-timer. Students should bring their camera with fully
charged batteries and user’s manual. Maximum 6.
GET BETTER PICTURES WITH YOUR

Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras have many
features to shoot great pictures under challenging
conditions. Students will study the benefits of using
various shooting modes, look at flash use and synch
speeds, aperture vs. depth of field, camera sensitivity
(ISO) and white balance considerations. We also cover
operation and care specific to DSLRs. Students should
bring their DSLR cameras with a fully charged battery
and user’s manual. Maximum 6.

METAL CLAY WORKSHOP

Learn how to use metal clay, a flexible
medium that can be rolled, stamped, cut and
manipulated like traditional clay. Finished pieces
are kiln or torch fired to become 99.9 percent pure
silver. Each week, students will learn new techniques
and tips for working with metal clay. Students will apply
those techniques to create a variety of pieces of their
own design. Maximum 12.

RESIN AND RECYCLING

Resin and recycling are two of the hottest
trends in jewelry today. Learn how to use
resin on a variety of recycled materials, including
dominoes, scrabble tiles and bingo numbers, to
make funky, unique, custom jewelry. Students will
learn how to use UV resin and traditional two-part epoxy.

KUMIHIMO: JAPANESE BRAIDING
Sarah Bober
Learn Kumihimo, a Japanese braiding
technique, to create several bracelet and
necklace designs. Students will learn the
traditional round braid and flat braid, as well as
how to incorporate beads. Kumihimo is an incredibly
versatile technique that allows students to make a wide
variety of patterns and designs. Maximum 8.

Make pieces of your own design using the techniques
of sawing, soldering and buffing metal. Beginning and

NATURE HAIKU WRITING
Jeannie Hanson
Inspired by nature at Lake Cornelia and the haiku
poetry tradition, this class will guide participants in
the writing of nature haiku. These mini-poems of three
lines — five, seven and five syllables, respectively — could
be considered the first Twitter. Creativity with words is
wonderful on its own, and it can also accompany visual
works. Maximum 12.
THE ART OF ROME
Greg Pulles
Join Greg Pulles, local photographer and author, for this free
lecture on the art of Rome. Pulles has been to Rome a dozen
times and has written and photographed an 800-page tabletop
book about Rome’s churches. He is also the author of two
guidebooks on Rome and presents a virtual tour of Rome’s art
through his slide show that will progress through the Ancient
Classical, Early Christian, Cosmati awakening, Renaissance

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a class will run
though you may have registered.
If We Cancel a Class —
If class has low enrollment and needs to be
canceled, you will be notified 48 hours prior to
the class start date. You will be notified by phone
and email. Please check your email and voicemail
before you leave for class. If you are uncertain,

2015 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD WINNERS
“Letting Go” by Judd Nelson of Wayzata, Minnesota, won
first place in the 2015 People’s Choice Awards for the Annual
Rotating Sculpture Exhibit.
“Screw Tail Bass” by Andrew Arend of Rochester, Minnesota,
placed second and “Gravitation II” by Steve Elliott of Wayne,
Nebraska, came in third. All three winning sculptures are
located on the Edina Promenade.
People’s Choice Award winners receive $1,000, $750 and
$500, respectively, and are invited to exhibit their sculptures
for an additional year for which they receive an additional
$500 stipend.

MAKE-UP CLASSES
Makeups will be arranged only when a class meeting is
canceled by the Art Center. If an instructor has another
class similar to your class, a make-up session is at the
discretion of the instructor.
HALF-CLASSES
The Edina Art Center offers half-classes for those
individuals that are unable to take a full class.
Our policy for Half-Classes is:
• The Art Center Front Desk staff places your name
on the Half-Class Wait List with the dates you are
available.
• Half-Class sessions are first-half/last-half only.
• Students are notified 24 hours before the class
starts if a half-space is available.
• We provide the dates of your availability to the
instructor to verify attendance.
• Only the Edina Art Center staff authorizes half-
space enrollment only. Instructors do not have
the ability to approve half-class enrollment. Please
talk to the Front Desk before speaking with your
instructor.
• Your enrollment is not guaranteed if you placed
your name on the Half-Class Wait-List. The list will
be first come, first served if an opening is available.
PRO-RATED CLASSES
The Edina Art Center does not pro-rate class tuition. The
only exception is Art Academy student registrations.
OPEN STUDIO TIME
We offer Open Studio time in painting, pottery and
jewelry to members registered in a current class as a
benefit of membership.
RESIDENT MEMBERS
To thank residents who are members of the Edina Art
Center, we offer a $5 discount on classes. You must
be a resident and a member to receive this offer.
RECIPROCAL MEMBERSHIP
As a thank you to our members of the Edina Art
Center, we offer a reciprocal membership with the
Walker Art Center. Please inquire about details.
CLASS SUPPLIES
Class supply lists will be emailed to students after
class registration is complete. Our Art Center supply
store has been downsized considerably and will only
carry sumi-e supplies, pottery tools, pencils, erasers
and sketchbooks. Members receive a 10 percent
discount on art supplies. Supplies used in adult
classes are to be purchased by the student.
GIFT SHOP/GALLERY MEMBER DISCOUNTS
Sorry! The 10 percent membership discount does
not apply to artist-created work found in the Gift
Shop or purchases made in our Margaret Foss
Gallery. We support our featured artists by asking
a minimal 35 percent commission on work sold. We
believe it is important that no further discount be
asked of the artist.
