HomeMy WebLinkAbout1965-08-09 Park Board MinutesVILIAN OF EDINIA PARK BOARD NINUTES August 9, 1965 HEMBERS PBESENTS Messrse Jackson, Diercks, Stevens, Lewis, Enroth, GiebinE, and Conover. STAFF PRESENT; Messrs. Rosland, Knjetin' Hyde, and Miss Bruns. Mr. Lewis moved that the minutes of the May 10, 1965 Edina Park board be approved as written. Doctor Jackson seconded and the motion carried. mo. Unjetin reported to the Park Board that the summer recreation has now ended except for the August session of swimming. The June-july swimming session was filled to capacity. Spxingboard diving was intro- duced this year in the swimming classes end was very successful. About 1250 children participated in the playground activities held at 15 different parks. Playground activity was held for the first time this year at Garden Park with a good turnout. Mr. Kojetin stated that there was an increase in playground attendance in a number of parks. Cub softball, which is for eight and nine year old boys had a very successful season. There was a total of 46 teams with approximately 12 boys on each team® lar® Kojetin reported that an increase in adult tennis was shown this year with a total of 57 adult participants� A small discussion was held concerning the.possibility of buildiDg additional courts. it was reported that some new signs have gone up an the courts stating that adults have preference after 5:00 p�mm but for only one set. Mr. Kojetin reported that creative dramatics had a trevandous increase this year because of the lower starting age. He pointed out that, because the theater class run by the high school is in competition with out theater class, serious consideration will be given to the possibility of not conducting a sumaer theater class next year. 111. G SAFETTY PROG W Xbjetin reported that the Gun Safety Course will be incorporated with the Optimist Club. He stated that there would be four classes offered -- two in Aa gust in the afternoon and two in September in the evening. A class would be held August 11th and 12th to certify men as qualified instructors® r® XDjetin pointed out that it is hoped that with these now men the course can be advanced to give more and better training in the instruction program. IV. MAINTEHANCE REPORT Mr. Xojet# reported that this sumner has been excellent for graving grass so two crews plus the large Torro's have been needed to been the parks in top condition. It was *.ca -ported tbat p*U9'"3' .fie are throwing their grass clippings in the creek and float-ing' bogs have created a problem,, Mr. Kojetin pointed out that we have been receiving a number of tree calls regarding Dutch Elm disease and oak wilt and nach of -these have been checked out. It was reported that the ball fields have been 'kept in excellent condition by our part time sumner maintenance crews. Mr. Rosland referred the Park Board :--o a report regarding the swim— ming pool. The report showed ehat through August 7, 1965, there was a total of $33,971.00 in season tickets as compared to ki. total of $34,920.50 in season tickets for 1964„ Also, the cash admissions through. August 7, 1965, were $1,596.99 short of what they %gere as of this date last year. Both of these were attributed to the fact of having a relvitive4y cool summer. Also, Mr. Kojetin pointed out the major expenses for 1965 were the complete overhaul of all valves, the change from Soda Ash to Caustic Soda, and the painting of the pool which is to be done this fall. AQ.UATENNIAL SWIM SET A discussion was held on the length or' the A A U meets that are held at the Edina Pool, Mr. Hyde stated that lira George masters ", uld like the support of the Edina Park board in trying to eliminate swim meets on Sunday mornings during the church hours and also to shorten the length of the.swilmming meets in general. Mr. Lewis moved that the Park Department net up curtain policies in regard to the use of the pool so that it would shorten the length of 0. the meets and eliminate swim meets on Sunday mo=.iings during regular church hours. Mr. Diercks seconded and the motion carried. '11r. Diercks revieved with the alk Board the July statement of the golf course whidh showed a uet profit oE $5,965.97 and pointed out that it seemed to be doing quite well. 34r. Hyde stated that the Par 3 Course needed more activity and that there was a 25 cent ratie cut in order to promote this course. Mr. Hyde also stated that the one major problem roinaining unsettled at the preient time is the breakage of the tinder water sprinkling pipes. Sumnarizi.ng tji�e changes, deduct -ions, --nd additions, the present cost of the arena will rivii �>300,964.00, It was also reported that an ad was vlaced in the Rink and Arena &tzine for a manager and that Mr. 110slaitid !lag had several inquiries from men insterested in this position. lt,%vas felt that a manager should be hired in the mionth of October so that 'tie may become familiar with the arena and the scheduling prior to the opening. Mr. Giebink and his ice arena committee was asked to join with Mr. Rosland and Mr. Hyde and work out criteria for the hiring of a manager. A discussion was held in regard to the name of the arena and after some discussion, it was moved by Doctor Jackson that the name be °'Braemar Arena." Mr. Glebink seconded and the motion carried. IX. COUNTY ROAD 13 & VALLEY VIEW 1WEETNUCTIO Mr. Roal.1nd presented a netw plan to the Board regarding County Road 18 and Valley View Intersection. The Park Board in a previous meeting approved a diamond interchanne on County Road 18 and a new road to run on the north boundary line of Braemar' Park. The new pvoposal to asking that this new road be rmoved south of tble Pxcsent boundary thus eliminating the only natural screening tilat would be available to hide tlae present public work storage building. ,ere. X111. BUDGLrr Mr. Hyde stated that the budget for the Park ani Recreation Depart- ment was modest and that it looked like a reasonable budget. Mr. Rosland assured the Park Board that -je are presently operating within the budget for 1965. 11r® Lewis moved that the 1966 reconiazended budget be approved.
