IN THE EDINA VILLAGE HALL Members Present: T. L. Todd, Chairman, Harry Gustafson, William Lewis, Leonard Odell, John Foley and William Wilkinson. Staff Presents George C. Hite, Planning Director; Karen Voss, Secretary. I. Upon motion of Mr. Gustafson and a second by Mr. Wilkinson, approval of the January 2, 1962 minutes was deferred until the March, 1962 meeting. II. ZONING Z-62-2Boh.En s tom Town Houses. 5500 France Avenue South Mr. Engstrom presented his request for multiple residence zoning on Lots 1 and 2, Block 1, Beard's Elmwood Terrace for the purpose of developing a six unit town house project on the site. These lots are on the west side of France Avenue at about West 55th Street. Mr. Engstrom displayed a proposed site plan along with a collection of pictures Of similar developments in eastern cities. He stressed that the proposed units would be of good quality and in his opinion a credit to the Edina community. Mr. Hite directed the Commission's attention to his written report on this subject which emphasized that in many respects this type of multiple residence development was more in keeping with Edina's residential traditions than are the apartments now being constructed throughout the Village. He suggested that this housing concept should be encouraged, but that as with any type of multiple residence development, particularly close attention would have to be given to the problems of siting. Mr. Todd indi-ated that he, for one, was not sure that Edina wantedinis "tenament or row housing", but that he did feel that the idea needed additional thought .and stud, before a decision could be reached, Mr. Wilkinson waid he thought that good quality town house de.eelo, ment would he welcomed in Edina, but that the Eng trcm proposal was both too small in scope and poorly rei=,ted to adjacent single family development. Mfr. Lewin mu,%aed that the request be denied. After a second by Fess. Wilkinson, the motion carried unanimously. Edina i lanninC' i.,onninsion Vn ,.!5 _'t'iaT'_tcziy 7; 1962 Ill.
