MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF
THE EDINA HERITAGE PRESERVATION BOARD
HELD JANUARY 27, 1981, AT 8:OOP.M.
EDINA CITY HALL CONFERENCE ROOM
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Foster Dunwiddie, Tom Martinson, Betty
Paugh, Gordon Stuart, Frank Thorpe
STAFF PRESENT: Harold Sand
OTHERS PRESENT: Councilman Fred Richards
Mr. Richards introduced himself as the newly appointed Council liaison
for the Heritage Preservation Board. He offered his support and assistance
for any of the activities of the Board. He indicated that the Minutes are a
good method of communication with the City Council.
I. The History and Architecture of Edina, Minnesota - Review of keyline
artwork.
Mr. Dunwiddie noted that the Board received copies of the artwork for
the publication and asked for any comments. Mr. Dunwiddie said that he has
already advised Mr. Fern about some minor corrections. The reference to
Alvah Bull should read James A. Bull. The reference to a historic district
should be eliminated on page 70 in the Morningside Bungalow District.
The National Register nomination for the Cahill School and the iMinnehaha
Grange Hall were incorrectly identified as authored by Brooks Cavin and
should be identified as Foster Dunwiddie.
Mr. Sand noted that the footnotes No. 25 and 28 were missing and
should be added. He also noted that there were some boundary errors
in the Country Club District map and the date of publication should be
changed to 1981. Mr. Sand indicated that the index was not included with
the text and Mr. Fern indicated the index was being prepared. In response
to a question from the Board, Mr. Sand indicated Mr. Fern has not pinpointed
a delivery date for the books. Mr. Sand said that the delivery date is not
critical because the Christmas sales season was missed. The quality of the
book may be improved if they are not rushed.
II. Wooddale School Committee - Activities Report
Mr. Dunwiddie said that the committee mailed 1,300 questionnaires to
residents in the vicinity of the school. The committee has tabulated the 611
responses and will present the results at a joint School Board/City Council
Meeting. The results of the survey have not been released,. however, there
appears to be strong support for leasing the building for community use.
The committee is continuing to study the costs of upgrading the building and
investigating the market for rental space. A draft copy of the report will be
available February 10 and the final copy will be presented February 23.
Mr. Dunwiddie will continue to monitor the activities of the committee.

Mr. Thorpe inquired about the impact of the National Register nomin-
ation of the Country Club District on the school decision. Mr. Dunwiddie
indicated that the only impact is a restriction of use of Federal funds for
any activity that will destroy or diminish the historic or architectural sig-
nificance of the building.
Ill. Inventory of Original Edina Homestead Ownership.
Mr. Dunwiddie said that Frank Carderelle persuaded Title Insurance
Co. to prepare and donate a list of all the original homestead owners in the
City. The material will be a valuable basis for additional research.
Mr. Sand presented a map of the City that he prepared to identify
all of the parcels in the inventory. He also presented colored maps illustrating
various multiple ownership patterns.
The Board generally agreed that the inventory was very interesting
and requested a letter be sent to Title Insurance Co. thanking them for
the donation of this valuable resource.
IV. Other Business
A. Erickson House, 4246 Scott Terrace
Mr. Dunwiddie reported that a quorum was not present for the Special
Meeting scheduled for January 6, 1981. Mr. Martinson and Mr. Dunwiddie
were present and they informally reviewed the plans for a new dwelling
adjacent to the Erickson house. The plans were prepared by Setter, Leach
and Lindstrom Inc. and were considered a very sensitive design of a new
passive solar dwelling adjacent to a historic building.
B. Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church - 7000 Cahill Road
Mr. Dunwiddie reported that the Edina Historical Society received a
letter from Rev. Mahon requesting preservation of the old church building.
A copy will be forwarded to the Heritage Preservation Board. Mr. Dunwiddie
briefly discussed the location of the building and its historical significance.
He indicated that Mr. Sand and he have previously inspected the site and met
with Mr. Marsh Everson, owner of the property. Mr. Everson is supportive
of historic preservation concepts, but does not necessarily support the Her-
itage Preservation District zoning. The Montessory school may be moved and
the site redeveloped for multiple family residences.
V. Next Regular Meeting Date: February 24, 1981, at 8:00 p.m.
VI. Adjournment - Mr. Thorpe moved adjournment. Mr. Stuart seconded
the motion. All voted aye; the motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
