MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
EDINA HERITAGE PRESERVATION BOARD
HELD TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1981, AT 7:30 P.M.
EDINA CITY HALL CONFERENCE ROOM
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Foster Dunwiddie, Tom Martinson, Frank
Thorpe, Lois Wilder and Betty Paugh
STAFF PRESENT: Harold Sand
1. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES:
Lois Wilder moved that the minutes of May 5, 1981, be approved as
submitted. Tom Martinson seconded the motion. All voted aye; the motion
carried.
II. TORNADO DAMAGE, JUNE 14, 1981:
Mr. Sand reported that the only significant damage to historic structures
was at the Edina Theater. The ziggurat shaped roof was blown off and the
theater marquee was damaged. The owner has indicated a desire to restore
the building and marquee. Mr. Martinson moved that the Board send a letter
to the theater owner encouraging the accurate reconstruction of the sign and
the replacement of the roof. Lois Wilder seconded the motion. All voted aye;
_--the.-motion carried. ._ Foster Dunwiddie saidthatthe plans --for the sign are on
'file at the Northwest Architectural Archives with Alan Lathrop.
111. HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE OF EDINA, MINNESOTA:
Mr. Dunwiddie reported that he and Mr. Sand met with William Scott
and Greg Fern to discuss the marketing program. A summary of the news
releases, donations to archives and retail sales locations was presented.
Additional donations to the "Minnesota Interpreter", "Preservation News",
"American Urban Guides" and "History News" were suggested. Additional
sales locations at Clancy's, Jerry's, Lund's and the Walker Bookstore were
suggested. Mr. Dunwiddie brought a news release and a mock-up of a
direct mail announcment and order form. Mr. Dunwiddie met with Barbara
Flanagan and Anne Braatas of the Minneapolis Star concerning articles about
the book.
.IV. WOODDALE SCHOOL REPORT
Mr. Dunwiddie reported that the Edina School District hired Doug
Johnson as the Community Center Administrator. Mr. Johnson has respon-
sibility over the Edina East Upper Division Building, 5701 Normandale Road
and Wooddale School, 4500 W. 50th Street. The School District has leased the
ground floor of Wooddaie School and has a prospective tenant for the second
floor. The life -safety improvements have been authorized and will be installed
by a contractor. The low bid of $95,000 compares favorably with the $172,000
estimated cost of the improvements.

V. OLD ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH, 7000 CAHILL ROAD:
Mr. Sand said that no additional information has been submitted at
this time. Donna Skagerberg is researching the history of the building and
the congregation through church records.
V1. COUNTRY CLUB MILL POND CASCADE:
Mr. Sand presented copies of the Board's 1976 policy statement for
rezoning of property and the 1976 criteria for evaluation of Heritage signi-
ficance. The Board reviewed the standards. No further action taken.
VII. OTHER BUSINESS:
Mr. Dunwiddie reported that Preservation Action has been successful
in restoring some of the federal budget cuts affecting Historic Preservation
programs.
Mr. Sand presented several items of correspondence and a copy of the
1954 Citizens' Committee Report recommending a change to a Plan B form of
municipal, government. The Board generally agreed that a copy should be
transmited to the Edina Historical Society.
Vill.. NEXT REGULAR MEETING DATE:
The Board discussed various conflicts with the regularly scheduled
July 28, 1981, meeting date. Lois Wilder moved cancellation of the July
meeting and the scheduling of the next regular meeting on Tuesday, August
25, 1981, at 7:30 pm,. Betty Paugh seconded the motion.. All voted aye;
the motion carried.
IX. ADJOURNMENT:
Frank Thorpe moved the meeting be adjourned. Tom Martinson seconded
the motion. All voted aye; the motion carried.
