EDINA CITY HALL MANAGER'S CONFERENCE ROOM MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Foster Dunwiddie, Stephen Sinykin, Gordon Stuart STAFF PRESENT: Harold Sand I. APPROVAL OF THE MINITTES- Stephen Sinykin moved approval of the September 22, 1981, minutes. Gordon Stuart seconded the motion. All voted aye; the motion carried. II. OLD ST. PATRICKS CHURCH, 7000 CAHILL ROAD: Donna Skagerberg, President of the Edina Historical Society presented research on the history of the church. The primary sources available are the Acta Et Dicta at the St. Paul Seminary Archives, 2260 Summit Avenue, St. Paula She said that the people at the archives are very helpful, but there is not much information. The church is referenced as Cahill, MN, Cahilltown and Cahill Settlement. There is also a reference to Rev. Father Cahill as the only priest doing missionary work between LaCrosse, WI and Austin, MN. Fr. Fayolle is mentioned as saying mass in the homes of John Duggan and John Burke. The first church, a log structure, was built in 1857 at West 70th Street and Wooddale Avenue. The original structure at West 70th Street and Cahill Road was built in 1884. This structure was destroyed in 1924 and replaced that same year by the present structure. She said there are questionnaires and histories written by pastors Fr. T.P. Ryan and Fr. Yaney, the first two pastors of the parish. The Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage records should be located at St. Anthonys in Minneapolis. However, this information will require additional research. Mr. Dunwiddie inquired if Mrs. Skagerberg was able to resolve the dif- ference between the photographs of the early church. The 100th Anniversary brochure illustrated a wood frame structure with a tall steeple and the 1967 "Edina Courier" article contained a photograph of a church with a short steeple. Mrs. Skagerberg said that she contacted all of the early Irish settlers in Edina to resolve the question. She received a photograph from Ed Ryan taken at his father's funeral in 1920. The photograph illustrates the short steeple version. She said that Catherine Garrison thought the steeple was struck by lighting and replaced prior to 1924. This theory has some merit because the bottom of the church appears the same in both photographs. Mrs. Skagerberg indicated that the church is significant because it is the only building remaining, on the original site, from one of the two early population centers in the community. The site and location of the building on the site is as important as the building itself. The preservation of the church will be important evidence of the heritage of the community. Mrs. Skagerberg mentioned that the church was celebrating the 125th Anniversary this year. Foster Dunwiddie displayed some slides of the church, Cameron's store and the Cahill School. The Board generally discussed the Cahill Community noting the fact that the Calvary of Cahill Church building was still standing, however, this church was constructed later and does not have the early community ties. Heritage Preservation Board October 27, 1981 Page 2 Mr. Dunwiddie thanked Mrs. Skagerberg for the additional information and requested that she provide a copy for future reference, a copy of refer- ence material rather than bibliographic references. III. HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE OF EDINA, MINNESOTA: Mr. Sand said that additional orders were received from The Bookmen, The Bookmill and The Architectural Bookstore. The Board suggested that copies be sold at the 125th Anniversary of St. Patricks Church. IV. EDINA THEATRE, SIGN: Foster Dunwiddie said that the sign was replaced and received some publicity from the news media. The replacement sign conforms to the original design and the flashing lights are gorgeous. Gordon Stuart moved that the Board sent a letter of appreciation to the owners of the theatre. Stephen Sinykin seconded the motion. All voted aye; the motion carried. V. CONFERENCES: Foster Dunwiddie announced two upcoming conferences that may be of interest to the Board. November 6, the Ramsey County Historical Society is conducting a seminar on the new economic incentives. November 12, the Minnesota Historical Society was conducting a seminar for Minnesota Heritage Preservation Commissions at the Oliver Hudson Kelley farm near Elk River, MN. The conference will provide information about the Economic Recovery Act, the 1982 MHS Grants Manual and provide a tour of the farm. The members present generally agreed to attend the MHS conference. VI. SELF GUIDED TOUR OF EDINA: Stephen Sinykin presented a preliminary outline of the tour. He is con- sidering preparing two history tapes and one architectural tape. The Board discussed the financing of the project and generally agreed that the project was moving in the proper direction. VII.
