Mr. Martinson moved approval of the June 22, 1982, minutes. Mr. Thorpe
seconded the motion. All voted aye; the motion carried.
II. Self -Guided Tours of Edina
Harold Sand presented maps illustrating two potential tours including a
historic overview tour and a Country Club District tour. The Country Club
tour would be a walking tour with tape recorded narrative identifying the
history and significance of the District, individually significant structures
such as the model homes and outstanding examples of each design style. The
Board discussed the tours and the possibility of a city architectural tour. The
Board decided to concentrate on the Country Club District tour at the present
time.
III. Edina Expo '83
Harold Sand explained the City is encouraging all boards and departments
to participate in Edina Expo 183. The Heritage Preservation Board can identify
Heritage Preservation Districts and National Register Districts on graphics, sell
history and architecture books and possibly the self -guided tour if it is available.
Mr. Martinson moved to join with the Edina Historical Society with a display and
sell Heritage Preservation Board materials. Mr. Thorpe seconded the motion.
All voted aye; the motion carried.
IV. Sarah Baird Diaries
Foster Dunwiddie explained that Minnesota Historical Society Archives
contain a collection of thirty volumes of diaries written by Sarah Baird in the late
19th and early 20th centuries. The hand written diaries contain information
about farming, the local and national Grange, the incorporation of the Village
of Edina and about the construction of their house which is listed in the National
Register of Historic Places. The diaries have been popular with researchers
studying women's history, the Grange and early rural life. The Board discussed
the benefits of transcribing the diaries and producing copies. The project appears
to be eligible for a 50 percent grant from the Minnesota Historical Society.
Foster Dunwiddie will prepare preliminary estimates for discussion.

MEMORANDUM
TO: Heritage Preservation Board
FROM: Harold Sand
DATE: September 23, 1982
SUBJECT: September 28, 1982, Meeting
After a short summer break it will be nice to meet again. Please note the
meeting time is changed to 8:00 P.M.
Some notes on agenda items:
1. Selfguided tour. I have prepared a list of potential sites and routes
based on existing tours and the book. Any suggestions will be welcome.
The material seems to divide into a city overview tour and a Country Club
District tour.
2. Edina Expo 183, April 16-17, 1983
Expo '83 will be a good opportunity to promote the activities of the Board.
Perhaps a display can be coordinated with the Edina Historical Society.
Possible activities include distribution of a brochure that explains the
purpose and programs of the Board and the differences with the Edina
Historical Society. We could create a display of Heritage Preservation
Districts and National Register sites. We could also'sell copies of History
and Architecture of Edina Minnesota, National rggister nominations and the
selfguided tour if available.
3. Sarah Baird Diaries. This 30 volume collection of small books contains
a handwritten account of the Baird family activities from the 1880's to the
1910's. The diaries, presently located at the Minnesota Historical Society
Archives are popular in research about women's history, rural midwest life
_ and the Grange. In addition, the diaries may reveal facts about the Baird
house, the incorporation of the City of Edina and the Minnehaha Grange.
The Board can pursue a project to transcribe and study the diaries. The
project appears eligible for a 50% matching grant from the Minnesota Historical
Society. The local share of the project may be available from the Edina
Foundation or other sources.
