Adjournment MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING EDINA HERITAGE PRESERVATION BOARD TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1984, AT 8:00 P.M. EDINA CITY HALL MANAGER'S CONFERENCE ROOM MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Foster Dunwiddie, Gordon Stuart, John Childs, Mary Nelson, Gary Nyberg and Tom Martinson STAFF PRESENT: Harold Sand I. Approval of the Minutes: Gordon Stuart moved approval of the April 24, 1984, minutes. John Childs seconded. All voted aye; motion carried. II Wooddale School Mr. Dunwiddie reported that City Manager, Ken Rosland, said the school District and the City have not completed the agreement with the terms of transfer of the property. Mr. Rosland said that the school use, park use and West 50th Street study to be prepared by BRW, Inc., will not be started until the agreement is completed. The Wooddale Montessori School will continue to occupy the building during summer school and will move to the new Cahill School next fall. This will delay any concerns about protection of an empty building. Mary Nelson inquired if another school use would be acceptable. The St. Stephens Junior League project is housed in the basement of the church and they may be interested because they are growing and could use larger quarters. The Edina Theatrical Group could use the auditorium because they are being displaced at the Edina Community Center. The Baord reiterated their concern about the preservation of Wooddale School as long as possible because the corner is terrifically important. The Board agreed to hold a special meeting if there were any further developments. III. Historic Tours and Markers The Board reviewed progress on the brochures for the tour and discussed coordinating the historic markers with the book, History and Architecture of_ Edina, Minnesota. IV. Dr. Idar Herring House, 6520 Indian Hills Road, Carl Humphrey Jr., Architect Mr. Sand said that the Planning Commission and City Council were considering a proposal to subdivide Lot 5, Block 1, Indian Hills into two lots and the division required removal of the existing dwelling at 6520 Indian Hills Road. In connection with the hearings, the City received a letter from Pamela Donnelly, a California architect who expressed concern about the loss of an architecturally significant structure. Mr. Sand checked with Mr. Alan Lathrop curator of the Northwest Architectural Archives in St. Paul which contain microfilm copies of the architectural plans for the dwelling. Edina Heritage Preservation Board May 22, 1984 Page two Mr. Carl E. Humphrey, Jr. (1914 - 1974) studied architecture at Yale and was a partner in the Wayzata architectural firm of Humphrey and Hardenberg. The firm was a very prolific designer of single family residences in the Excelsior and Wayzata area. The firm worked in recognized styles of the period and the design was not exceptional or tremendously innovative. The design tended to reflect the mainstream of architecture of the period. The index to the microfilm indicates that there are plans for five other Edina dwellings designed by Humphrey and Hardenberg including: * Hubert T. Sparrow Residence (1950) 6620 Cheyenne Trail * Dewey Hill Residence(1950) 7300 Claredon Drive (Formerly 5930 Dewey Hill Rd.) * Verne Barker Residence (1950) 6700 Cheyenne Trail * Dr. A. J. Root Residence (1948) (location unknown) * Hal Burton Residence (1953) (location unknown) The Board reviewed the Building Department and Assessing Department's records and the architectural plans from the Northwest Architectural Archives. Mr. Dunwiddie indicated he visited the site to view the dwelling. The Board concluded that they did not find any great historic or architectural significance inthe dwelling that merits preservation. V. Next Meeting Date: The Board decided to cancel the June Meeting and schedule the next meeting for July 24, 1984 at 8:00 p.m. VI. Adjournment: 8:45 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Harold Sand
