Southdale Mall Update
DATE: February 23, 1989
Meeting Cancellation:
The regularly scheduled meeting for Tuesday, February 28, 1989 has been
cancelled due to the lack of old or new business.
Southdale Mall Update:
On February 9, 1989 Phil Dommer and I met with David Hendey, Southdale Center
Manager. At that time, we presented the idea of developing a commemorative
display highlighting the unique aspects of the mall as an Edina landmark.
Mr. Hendey has worked at Southdale since it's inception, and he too appreciates
the enormous impact the mall has made. He was receptive to the commemoration
idea, noting that the timing was good since they will start meeting to finalize
the decor and displays within the court yard to include newly created atrium
areas.
We advised Mr. Hendey that the Heritage Preservation Board and City in general
did not have the funds to develop the first class type of commemoration that
Southdale deserves. Mr. Hendey stated that he felt a financial venture such as
this would be of interest to both the Center Companies and Equitable Assurance
Company, the owners of Southdale.
Now, the ball is in Southdale's court, so to speak. Mr. Hendey assured us that
he would be meeting with the owners, Equitable soon, at which time he would
present the commemoration idea. He pointed out that upon getting the go ahead
from Equitable, we could then set up future meetings.
