TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1992, AT 7:00 P.M.
EDINA CITY HALL MANAGER'S CONFERENCE ROOM
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman, Gary Nyberg, Marilyn Curtis, David
Gepner, Herman Ratelle and Lois Wilder
MEMBERS ABSENT: Lynn Barrett and Donald Wray
STAFF PRESENT: Joyce Repya
I. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: January 28, 1992
Lois Wilder called attention to a punctuation correction
necessary on page 2 of the minutes.
Herman Ratelle moved for approval of the minutes as corrected.
David Gepner seconded the motion. All voted aye; the motion
carried.
II. PERMIT APPLICATION FOR MODIFICATIONS:
A. Review Proposed Form
Ms. Repya presented the revised permit for modifications form,
pointing out that as directed at the last meeting, she had added
the word "exterior" to the application.
Following a brief discussion, Herman Ratelle moved for
approval and use of the new permit application for exterior
modifications. David Gepner seconded the motion. All voted aye;
the motion carried.
B. Cahill School - Replace 2 east doors
Ms. Repya explained that Bob Kojetin, Park Director is
requesting the replacement of the two exterior east doors on the
school. The existing doors are not the original doors, and are
actually interior doors which have not weathered the elements, and
have in fact, warped over time.
The new doors will be exterior quality and will be painted to
match the school.
Following a brief discussion, Herman Ratelle moved to approve
the two easterly exterior doors on Cahill School as proposed in the
Permit for Modification. David Gepner-secondedthe motion. All
voted aye; motion carried.
III. COUNTRY CLUB DISTRICT INFORMATION BROCHURE:
Ms. Repya advised the Board that since the brochure was sent
to the residents of the district, the response has been very
positive.
Several homeowners have called requesting information about
the architectural style of their homes and characteristics
consistent With that style.
Chairman Nyberg pointed out that the Northwest Architectural
Archives at the University would be a good resource for people
doing research on their home. He added that many old architectural
firms have turned their files over to the archives.
IV. WOODDALE PARR/COUNTRY CLUB DISTRICT SIGN:
Ms. Repya explained that she had discussed the proposed sign
for Wooddale Park with Park Director, Bob Kojetin. Mr. Kojetin is
planning to incorporate the original bricks from Wooddale School
into the sign. The two memorial tablets reading "Edina School" and
"Erected 1926" could be used as well to include the Country Club
District history into the sign. Currently, however, there are not
funds available for the sign.
Chairman Nyberg asked what happened to the old limestone
pillars from the school facade. He had remembered seeing a plan by
BRW showing the pillars used in a Country Club memorial.
Ms. Repya explained that the pillars are currently at Arneson
Acres and are proposed to be used in the construction of gazebo at
Arneson.
Discussion ensued among Board members regarding the use of the
pillars at Arneson Acres vs the old Wooddale School site. Board
members expressed their feelings that the pillars should be used on
the site from which they came.
Chairman Nyberg asked Ms. Repya to review the Wooddale School
file; specifically checking into alternative uses which were
proposed prior to the school's demolition. As he recalled, a plan
existed which incorporated the pillars in a memorial. No formal
action was taken.
V. CERTIFIED LOCAL GOVERNMENT PROGRAM:
Ms. Repya advised the Board that Ms. Britta Bloomberg, Deputy
State Historic Preservation officer will be attending the Board's
May 26th meeting to discuss the Certified Local government Program
and answer any questions the Board might have.
VI. CABILL SETTLEMENT:
Board members discussed the progress of the Cahill settlement
display, questioning when the memorial pla ques will be installed.
Ms. Repya explained that the pla ques have been designed, but
have not been made due to the cost involved. She agreed to further
investigate the status of the pla ques and report back to the Board
at the May meeting.
