HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-09-01 Park Board MinutesMinutes of Meeting of Edina Park Board September lst. 1948__ The meeting was called to order at 8 P. M. by Chairman Howard Clark. Strachauer and Clark present. Mr. A. G. Atkin, Wood-Shol Company, was present regarding the strip of land on 58th Street between Wooddale and France for which the Park Board had previously offered $10,000. Mr. Atkin said the attitude of.the present owners is that they will retain this land until market is up to a higher level. Clark said this parcel of land would be forgotten for the time being because --it could not be used for the purposes which the Park Board had in mind. Several larger areas are being considered for play grounds, sports, etc. Mrs. Snyder, 4909 W. Sunnys:�ope, had called Mr. Clark. She complained that the Millpond had dried up and there was a path through the creek bed and children were playing there and bringing junk into the area. Clark told her that the Creek was not Park Board property and they could not stop such activities. She was told that she could attend the Park Board meeting and register her complaint, but she did not appear. Clark wanted a statement of how much had been spend so far this year by the Park Board, but the figures were still not available but would be t&i& next week. As soon as the expenses were tabulated, a special meeting of the Recreational Committee would be called and plans for winter prepared. Willard Robinson, of Thielen Avenue, had called Clark about some trees being in bad shape. He was referred to the Village Engineer about this matter. Strachauer suggested that some experts from the University of Minnesota be invited to attend the meeting with the Recreational Committee regarding the amount of property needed in relation to the population in Edina. Clark recommended that the back stop at 52nd & Minnehaha be removed by October 1st for the winter months. It was also suggested that the skating area be prepared before October 15th. A discussion followed about asking the Edina Volunteer Fire De- partment to flood suitable areas for skating rinks. Strachauer suggested that news Minutes of Meeting of Edina Park Board September 1st, 1948 - 2 items be put in neighborhood papers stating that applications for flooding will be accepted by the Park Board but that certain requirements and time would have to be considered# that the areas would have to be prepared according to specifications and passed by the Park Board. A warming house on the lake on Golf Terrace was discussed# but it was decided that no warming house could be put up the the ice might be scraped. A survey was to be made regarding the warming house on Mirror Lake. The possibility of having skating exhibitions on the piMp©nd was also discussed. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 P. M.
