HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-03-01 Earth Hour Proclamation ow e 0IRRR Earth Hour Proclamation Whereas, all people and cultures are dependent on a healthy environment for a safe and fulfilling life; and Whereas, the burning of fossil fuels to produce energy is one of the major contributors to rising temperatures and levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, causing rapid climate change in Minnesota and around our planet; and Whereas, electric lights account for a great deal of energy use; and Whereas, Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Earth Hour, organized by WWF, had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of the City of Edina, do hereby proclaim 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 as: Earth Hour In Edina The Edina City Council asks that all the residents, schools, churches and businesses in Edina turn off their lights (where safe) for the designated hour and to appreciat the gift of a life- supporting environment.
