GUEST PRESENTATIONS Berit Peterson, Edina Public Schools, gave a presentation on the Edina Public Schools Health Services Annual Report and the following current health issues in the Edina schools: Asthma is the biggest concern as is an increase in child obesity and diabetes. Attention deficit issues are now being controlled by long acting meds thereby reducing the need to administrate meds during the school day. Strep throat is the highest communicable disease risk, followed by pick eye and pertussis (whooping cough). Mental health and depression has become a huge problem and statistics indicate a 100% probability that there are dangerous kids in all schools. Kathy Iverson, Edina Chemical health Coordinator, discussed the following: Minnesota Chemical Health Week, November 14-18. Red ribbons and educational materials on tobacco use were distributed. Summer Playground – Chemical / Tobacco Training with approximately 600 students participating. Packets on drug information which the children receive in the training sessions were distributed. Edina Unplugged - March 13, 2006. Encourage families to spend time together at home for one nite and not be distracted by public meetings, events, TVs, computers, telephones, cell phones etc. Alcohol is the #1 drug of choice among Edina students and that binge drinking has become very popular. They are not seeing drugs such as meth, heroin, etc in Edina schools. Motion was made by Bill Alldredge and seconded by Idelle Longman that the Community Health Committee support Chemical Health Week. Motion carried. Ms. Iverson will use the Health Committee endorsement on event materials. COMMUNITY HEALTH COMMITTEE REPORTS Chair Richard Olson indicated that committee goals were being addressed. He also indicated that some committee members did not have an opportunity to complete their assigned survey work. He encouraged members to continue their work and be ready to report at the next meeting. Idelle Longman reported on the Community Health Conference, Strong Families, Healthy Communities: Investing in Our Future which was held September 14-16, 2005 in Brainerd. She shared several handout materials offered at the conference and briefly discussed public health response to Hurricane Katrina, Governors “ Fit City Campaign”, Minnesota Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention Plan 204-2010, and Dr. Hulls’ overview of gastrointestinal diseases, mental health , high blood pressure, and kidney disease. She indicated a desire by Commissioner of Health Diane Mandernach to come to Edina to discuss health issues with the committee. Ms Longman agreed to meet with City officials to determine the possibility of linking the Commissioners presentation with another community event and audience. She will report back at the next meeting. The Committee felt it would receive visibility by sponsoring the Commissioner of Health in a public forum. HEALTH STAFF REPORTS Sherry Engelman gave a summary of the committee self assessments. The assessments were to help determine committee strengths and weaknesses and define improvements needed to make committee work rewarding and productive. Committee members were encouraged to use this assessment as a tool for progress. Suggestions from these assessments include: Define mission/purpose for the Community Health Committee Format goals and assignments for members Provide guest speakers at each committee meeting Develop member name cards to use during meetings Consider availability of refreshments during meetings All suggestions have been addressed. Assessment results will be reviewed again at the next meeting. Staff reported that work is underway to establish the City of Edina as an emergency preparedness back-up system to the City of Bloomington for HAN (Health Alert Network). The year end goal is to have in place a back-up E-mail and fax distribution system to alert health providers in case of emergency. The Edina system would only be activated if the Bloomington distribution system was not operational. Staff also reported that at this time, community Health Committees of Bloomington and Richfield were not interested in having a meeting with all three health committees. Sherry Engelman reported that plans are progressing for the Edina Senior Resource Fair which will be held April 25, 2006 9-12pm at Colonial Church. This Fair is being organized by Edina Federated Women’s Club, Edina Resource Center and Edina Community Foundation along with the City of Edina.
