She gave a power point presentation on Avian Flu and followed with a video on Pandemic Flu. Three educational handouts were also distributed: Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), What Is An Influenza Pandemic?, and Seeking To Keep The Continuity In Event Of Avian Flu. A valuable question/answer discussion followed as committee members posed unique questions. (This presentation occurred prior to Call To Order because of known late arrival of Chair Elect and speakers other commitments. CALL TO ORDER Chair Elect, Tolu Oyelowo, arrived at 7:45 pm and called the meeting to order. Changes to the Agenda included moving Committee Representation to SCHSAC to the March 2006 meeting, and adding 2006 Meeting Dates and Commissioner of Health to Other Business. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes from October 18 meeting were unavailable. They will be presented at the next meeting for approval. COMMUNITY HEALTH COMMITTEE REPORTS The 2005 Committee Goals were distributed and reviewed. Define the mission/purpose of our committee Review and update the by-laws where necessary Review the 2003 Edina Senior Study for the Edina Human Rights & Relations Commission for health issues which our committee may consider for study Survey other groups studying health or senior issues in the City of Edina in attempt to identify common efforts on health issues, define gaps in the health system, and develop partnerships to work together toward health related goals. Identify one community health issue and develop a recommendation to City Council for their consideration. Three key areas identified were elder care, a broad perspective on prevention, and fitness for health. Identify gaps in provisions and delivery of community health services to Edina residents. (This may be identified in the Edina Senior Study.) Discussion followed that while goals were not completed, work was well underway to accomplishing them. By-Laws will be reviewed at the next regular meeting. Update on committee work regarding the community survey indicated that some members still needed to complete their assignments. Members agreed to have all assignments completed and returned to Chair Richard Olson by December 1, 2005 for final tallying. William Alldredge, Lynn Moline and Tolu Oyelowo discussed the following comments they received during interviews: Need for available mental health services, especially for teens and seniors Need for more low cost providers Need for transportation to get patients to providers Need for family practice doctors to understand mental health illness Need for physicians to get involved in public education regarding mental health illness. Offer from Chamber of Commerce to support Community Health Committee Increase in domestic and school based violence indicates need for increased education and awareness (Cornerstone currently does group educational presentations to students) Need for awareness of other health issues resulting from violence Idelle Longman suggested that the interview form be modified for the remaining interviews by adding a question about mental health. For reason of consistency, the committee decided not to change the form. HEALTH STAFF REPORTS Sherry Engelman gave a summary of the committee self assessments. The assessments were to help determine committee strengths and weaknesses and define improvements needed to make committee work rewarding and productive. Committee members were encouraged to use this assessment as a tool for progress. Suggestions from these assessments include: Define mission/purpose for the Community Health Committee Format goals and assignments for members Provide guest speakers at each committee meeting Develop member name cards to use during meetings Consider availability of refreshments during meetings All of these suggestions have been addressed. Sherry Engelman reported that plans are progressing for the Edina Senior Resource Fair which will be held April 25, 2006 9-12pm at Colonial Church. This Fair is being organized by Edina Federated Women’s Club, Edina Resource Center and Edina Community Foundation along with the City of Edina. The intent is to develop this fair into a yearly event. The Fair will host exhibits of nonprofit organizations which provide services to seniors. Plans are also underway to acquire workshop speakers for the event. Ideas for health screenings available that day include stroke, cholesterol, blood pressure, respiratory rehab and hearing. Some of these will have a nominal charge. Members of the Community Health Committee may have opportunity to be involved as volunteers on event day. OTHER BUSINESS Committee meeting dates were set for March 21, May 16, September 19 and November 21, 2006. Idelle Longman led a discussion on the possibility of inviting Diane Mandernack, Commissioner of Health, to the City of Edina to speak in a forum. This opportunity would give support and exposure to the City of Edina, the Edina Community Health Committee and would provide an interactive opportunity for Edina residents and businesses. Forum topics could include Governors “Fit City Campaign”, mental illness or elder care. Sherry Engelman distributed information on the “Fit city Campaign”. All members were enthusiastic about the program. and felt they should consider it as a possible recommendation to the City Council Ms. Longman recently met with Gordon Hughes, Edina City Manager and Sherry Engelman to discuss ideas to accomplish this. Three suggestions were to invite the Commissioner to participate in the 1) Senior Resource Fair, 2) an event with Connecting With Kids or 3) a public forum with Richfield, Bloomington and Edina Community Health Committees. Ms Longman felt that if the Community Health Committee brings the Commissioner to the Senior Fair, then the Committee should be a sponsor of the Fair to gain visibility. Members felt the best arena would be the public forum. Sherry Engelman will contact Bloomington and Richfield Health Committees to determine their interest. A suggestion was made to consider spring 2006 to host a forum. Members felt that the Committee should go forward with a recommendation to City Council to participate in “Fit City Campaign”. In light of that recommendation and additional time needed to review the survey, members decided to add a special meeting in 2006 to accomplish these things. January 24 and February 21 were suggested with decision to hold it January 24, 2006. The date will be confirmed since some members did not have their calendars available. ADJOURNMENT Motion was made by Lynn Moline and seconded by Idelle Longman to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 9PM. Respectfully Submitted, ____________________ Sherry Engelman ________________________________________________________________________ 2006 Meeting Dates: March 21 May 16 September 19 November 21 **Special meeting will be scheduled for January 24**
