Minutes from November 15, 2005 meeting were approved by motion from Lynn Moline and second from Mark Johnson. COMMUNITY HEALTH SURVEY RESULTS Chair Richard Olson led a discussion on results of the community health survey conducted by committee members. The committee surveyed other groups studying health or senior issues in the City of Edina in attempt to identify common efforts on health issues, define gaps in the health system, and develop partnerships to work together toward health related goals. The following needs were identified: Mental health services available especially for teens and seniors Support services for elderly and aging in place Program funding More low cost health providers Transportation for patients to providers, including providers outside of Edina Family practice doctors to understand mental health illness Physicians to get involved in public education regarding mental health illness Physical exams on preschoolers in shelters Links to younger parents Broaden school based violence prevention program Awareness of other health issues resulting from violence Common themes of these unaddressed issues were summarized as 1) Mental health services for school age and senior populations 2) General elderly and aging-in-place services, 3) Transportation to other communities and 4) Substance abuse prevention. The committee felt that a center of outreach is needed as an advocate for the organizations and their resources, to partner the organizations. A suggestion was made to invite Val Burke, Edina Resource Center to the next committee meeting to explain how the Senior Resource Center operates and links with the organizations. Possibly the Resource Center is our avenue to fulfilling the outreach discussed. Discussion continued regarding service needs for mental health services. A suggestion was made to consider a Tri-City Mental Health Nurse Line. Members agreed this was a good idea however no action was taken. Kathy Iverson announced that an Edina Town Hall Forum on “Under Age Drinking: Reduce The Use” will be held March 27, 2006 at 7pm at City Hall. The governor has encouraged cities to hold meeting regarding this. COMMISSIONER OF HEALTH FORUM This meeting was specially arranged to plan a Commissioner of Health Forum in the City of Edina. Pending acceptance by the Commissioner, the forum will be held April 25, 2006, 6:30-8pm in the City Council Chambers. Idelle Longman will act as liaison between the committee and the Commissioners office with arrangements. She indicated that the commissioner is willing to speak on any health topic. After lengthy discussion, the committee decided the three forum topics to be Obesity, Governors “Fit City” Campaign, and Pandemic Flu. Mental health was also suggested however the group felt three topics would be enough to fill the forum agenda. Possibly mental health could be discussed via question/answer session at the end of the program. The Bloomington and Richfield health committees will be invited to attend. While the agenda is tentatively decided, staff will contact both groups for their topic ideas. Edina health committee will invite the Edina mayor, council, city manager, representative from Parks Department, chemical health coordinator, school district nurse, state representatives Jeff Michelle Ron Gerhardt, and the non-profit organizations recently surveyed by the committee. Since the council chamber has limited seating, the committee decided that each of the three health committees could invite 40 people. Information will be given to Bloomington and Richfield health committees and they will be responsible for getting the announcement to those they wish to invite. Chair Richard Olson will write an invitation letter and staff will work on a draft agenda. When complete, staff will do the mailing. OTHER BUSINESS ADJOURNMENT Motion was made by Idelle Longman and seconded by Bill Alldredge to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 9PM.
