WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes from March 21, 2006 meeting were approved with corrections by motion from Member Johnson and second from Member Longman. . RECOMMENDATION TO COUNCIL – “FIT CITY” CAMPAIGN Chair Oyelowo asked for a motion to recommend that the City of Edina participate in the Governors “Fit City” Campaign. Prior to the motion, discussion included a review of the “Fit City” criteria and a suggestion that the committee sponsor a future physical activity such as a fun run or walk for residents. Liaison Engelman said that the recommendation may be included on the June 20 council agenda unless that agenda was full. Motion was made by Member Johnson and seconded by Member Longman to make a recommendation to Council to participate in the “Fit City” Campaign. Vote was unanimous. Following the vote, members reviewed a draft recommendation letter and suggested that the purpose of the “Fit City” be added to the recommendation. Member Oyelowo agreed to make the change and work with Liaison Engelman to put the recommendation on City of Edina letterhead. Copies of the recommendation will go into the Council packets prior to the council meeting. While no one was assigned, members offered to attend the council meeting to present the Fit City recommendation if needed. Liaison Engelman will confirm this need and inform Chair Oyelowo. EVALUATION OF COMMISSIONER OF HEALTH PRESENTATION Overall, members felt that the Commissioner of Health forum was very well received, the topics were timely and the forum was very successful. The unique opportunity to meet with the Bloomington and Richfield Health Committees during the forum was especially valuable and members felt a need to continue working together with both of those committees. The committee also mentioned that the Mayor and City Manager stayed for the entire presentation which they felt was very important. Members Oyelowo and Alldridge were recognized for doing a great job of facilitating the forum. At times the Commissioner’s presentation was somewhat generalized however members agreed that was probably due to the fact that the intended audience included individuals outside of the health community. The presentation, which was planned to be one hour, went over time thereby leaving insufficient time for questions. Another comment was that an announcement did not appear on the message board outside of city hall however Liaison Engelman reminded members that an official announcement was put in the Sun Current and posted in city hall. Members agreed that the forum gave visibility to the Community Health Committee and consideration should be given to sponsor future forums. The committee thanked Member Longman for originally suggesting the idea of a forum with the Commissioner and for her unique work planning the forum. Individual copies of the Commissioner’s presentation are available for $25 or may be checked out from the Edina Library or city hall receptionist. Liaison Engelman reported that the Richfield Health Committee requested a copy of the presentation. REVIEW GOALS In general discussion, the committee offered ideas of hosting mental health forum in 2007 and considering a pandemic flu forum also. Before the end of 2006, the committee plans to develop a message to the community on pandemic flu planning, to include a Question/Answer fact sheet. The Sun Current, About Town and About Business can be used to get the message out. Before this message can be developed, the committee needs to find out what the city plan is and also assess the planning status of the business community. Member Johnson offered to lead the information gathering and meet with liaison Engelman regarding this. The discussion was tabled for further review at the next scheduled meeting. OTHER BUSINESS Member Longman reported that daytime tours of the new MDH lab are available to the committee if there is still an interest in this. Possibly the Bloomington and Richfield Health Committees would be interested also. This topic was tabled until the next meeting. Liaison Engelman reported that the Mayor is aware of the committee vacancies but has not appointed new members yet. It is difficult to obtain a quorum for a meeting with such vacancies. ADJOURNMENT Motion made by Member Longman and seconded by Member Alldredge to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 am ________________________ Sherry Engelman ________________________________________________________________________ 2006 Meeting Dates: March 21 May 16 September 19 November 21 **Special meeting will be scheduled for January 24**
