HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-03-13 Community Health Commission Minutes Edina Community Health Committee March 13, 2007, 6:30 – 8:30 pm Community Room City Hall Members Present: Bill Alldredge, Jan Johnson, Mark Johnson, Mary Jo Kingston, Brad Montgomery, Tolu Oyelowo Members Absent: Idelle Longman Guests: Wayne Houle, City Engineer and Roger Glanzer, Utility Superintendent Staff Present: Sherry Engelman WELCOME & CALL TO ORDER Chair Oyelowo welcomed members and called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. CITY WELLS PRESENTATION Guest speakers Wayne Houle and Roger Glanzer gave an overview of the city water, city wells, the Drinking Water Report as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Interesting information was given regarding the changes to the water standards over the years, water testing equipment technology, improvements on filtering systems, need for changes to existing wells and addition of new wells, and adjustments to water utility fees. Wayne suggested that the Committee consider taking a tour of the water treatment plant. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Members Mark Johnson and Jan Johnson were nominated as candidates for Chair. Being new to the committee, Jan declined. Motion made by Member Alldredge and seconded by Member Kingston to elect Member Mark Johnson as Chair. Vote was unanimous. Member Montgomery was nominated as Vice Chair. Motion made by Member Mark Johnson and seconded by Member Jan Johnson to elect Member Montgomery as Vice Chair. Vote was unanimous. Chair Mark Johnson took charge of the meeting. He gave special thanks to Member Oyelowo for her dedication and leadership as past Committee Chair. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes from November 21, 2006 meeting were approved by motion from Member Kingston and second from Member J. Johnson . 2007 COMMITTEE WORK PLAN Fitness Challenge letters were completed and ready to distribute to other Boards & Commissions at the Annual Meeting March 19. There was a brief discussion regarding mental health or obesity as topics for a fall town forum. Suggestions were made to have a joint meeting with Bloomington and Richfield on the forum and consider a panel discussion. Liaison Engelman will check with both agencies to determine their interest and also to acquire suggestions on narrowing mental health focus. The Committee decided to hold a special meeting on April 25 to further discuss the forum. MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH LAB TOUR Members who attended the tour of the MDH lab gave a report on the tour. All were impressed with the level of technology and capability of the lab. Special thanks to Member Longman for arranging the tour. Chair Johnson requested the Member Longman write a thank you letter to MDH on behalf of the Committee. HEALTH STAFF REPORTS Liaison Engelman reported that the Recycling Commission was abolished by City Council and a new Energy/Environment Commission will be established over the next several months. The new Commission will focus on energy issues. A pandemic flu tabletop exercise was conducted January 25 as training for several senior staff employees. The exercise provided opportunity for feedback on missing elements of emergency response. Edina employees organized an Employee Wellness Committee. Several events and activities are in the planning for 2007. The goal is to encourage employees to become more active and to improve their overall health. The effort supports the “Fit City” designation received by Edina in 2006. PUBLIC COMMENT None presented. OTHER BUSINESS Member Jan Johnson gave an update of the 2007 Senior Expo which is scheduled for the fall at Colonial Church. She indicated the need to provide transportation to the event since many seniors are unable to drive themselves. A suggestion was made to contact VEAP regarding transportation. Member Johnson also suggested that the Committee have a representative at the Senior Expo distributing the “Fit City” green wrist bands. ADJOURNMENT Motion made by Member Oyelowo and seconded by Member Kingston to adjourn.
