HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-11-20 Community Health Commission Meeting Minutes Edina Community Health Committee November 20, 2007, 6:30 – 8:30 pm Mayor’s Conference Room, City Hall Members Present: Mark Johnson, Mary Jo Kingston, Idelle Longman, Brad Montgomery, Tolu Oyelowo, Members Absent: Bill Alldredge, Jan Johnson, Student Marshall Everson Guests: Betty Elliott, Edina School Nursing Coordinator Staff Present: Sherry Engelman WELCOME & CALL TO ORDER Chair Mark Johnson welcomed members and called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes from September 18, 2007 meeting were unanimously approved following a motion from Member Longman and second from Member Montgomery. GUEST SPEAKER Betty Elliott, Edina School Nursing Coordinator, gave an overview and brief summary of the school district nursing program. Allergies, asthma, mental health and obesity are areas of health concern. Elliott praised the highly skilled nursing staff dedicated to serving the students in our community. Chair M. Johnson thanked Elliott for her presentation to the Committee. 2007 COMMITTEE WORK PLAN Members discussed the recent Childhood Obesity Town Forum which they sponsored in October. Speakers at the forum were Joan Bulfer, Bloomington Public Health and Seth Bixby Daugherty, Chef. The forum was enjoyed and well received by attendees. The Sun Current carried a front page article on the forum. The Ice Breaker meeting before the forum gave members of Richfield, Bloomington and Edina Advisory Boards of Health an opportunity to network and share ideas within the three communities. Members agreed that the network session was valuable. Chair Johnson expressed sincere thanks to the forum work group and Liaison Engelman for dedication and efforts put into the planning and implementation of the forum and it success. From the discussion regarding a health column in the Sun Current, members decided to include the project in the 2008 Committee Work Plan. Member J. Johnson suggested the idea to the committee at a previous meeting. Chair M. Johnson made a motion to name Member J. Johnson to lead this project, Member Longman seconded the motion. Vote was unanimous. Liaison Engelman was asked to inform Member Johnson of the decision. After a short discussion, the committee decided on three projects 1) a health column in the Sun Current, 2) Community Health Assessment and 3) SCHSAC award nomination for their 2008 Work Plan. They decided against sponsoring a town forum in 2008. MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Liaison Engelman reported that Bloomington Public Health will conduct an on-line community health survey early in 2008. The survey will give residents and a variety of community groups an opportunity to provide input on community health concerns. The survey results will be the reviewed and evaluated by Bloomington, Edina and Richfield Advisory Boards of Health during a joint community health assessment meeting. Minnesota Department of Health requires that community health assessments be completed once every 5 years. Two meetings in spring 2008 are being planned for the assessment process, giving members of the three advisory health boards an opportunity to share and compare health information, and develop priority health concerns in each community. Chair Johnson encouraged all committee members to complete this survey when it becomes available. HEALTH STAFF REPORTS Liaison Engelman reported on the Edina Employee Wellness Committee and newest activity, the Walk to Beijing. A version of the Olympic Torch was passed from employee to employee to kick off the event, which will track employees daily steps, encourage employees to be more active and walk more. Engelman also reported on Edina’s new CodeRed Emergency System. The system will be used to send emergency messages out to the residents by phone. Land line phone numbers are automatically included in the system however residents using only a cell phone as their home phone are encouraged to register their cell phone. Member Longman gave a detailed report of the Annual SCHSAC Conference which she attended. Some of the key topics covered at the conference were public health emergency preparedness, mental health and obesity. Chair Johnson thanked Member Longman for representing the Edina Community Health Committee at this statewide conference. PUBLIC COMMENT None presented. OTHER BUSINESS Liaison Engelman presented the 2008 meeting dates: March 24, May 20, September 16 and November 18. Engelman also reminded members of the upcoming Annual Meeting in March for all Edina Boards and Commissions. ADJOURNMENT Motion made by Member Kingston and seconded by Member Longman to adjourn. Vote to adjourn was unanimous.
