COMMUNITY COMMENT: None REPORTS/RECOMMENDATIONS Kim Milbrath reported on a Community Health Project involving Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the Cities of Edina, Bloomington and Richfield. The project will be launched at a Breakfast @ Edina Country Club on Sept 27th. Kim was unable to give specifics of the project until after the Launch. The purpose is to create a vision of what a healthy community looks like—somewhat akin to the SHIP project. The focus is on community vision and goals are to decrease health care costs, by decreasing tobacco use, obesity and other unhealthy life choices. After the Breakfast, there will be a Community walk with the Mayors of the three cities, Blue Cross Administrator’s and Staff around Lake Normandale. We are invited to join them. Betty Elliott, Edina Schools Health Services Coordinator reported on the Health Services Program Annual Report for 2010-2011. Attached is the full report including the summary of the Health Services for public and non-public schools. Member Jeff Bartleson raised a question regarding dental health in the schools. Elliott replied that students with dental issues would be referred to their physician. Mary Lombardi, Food and Nutrition Coordinator for the schools reported on the activities of the Food Services. The District has a wellness Committee and their Guidelines are available online at edinaschoolsupportservices/healthandnutrition . The following efforts are in place; 1)the schools provide non-bottled water and skim and low fat milk, 2) evaluations of ala cart selections are being documented, 3) the new USDA logo MYPLATE is being introduced by the food service company Sodexo. The Edina Magazine for August featured the South Education Center Alternative (SECA) success. CORRESPONDENCE AND PETITIONS: None CHAIR AND COMMITTEE COMMENTS: Member Jeff Bartleson asked if it would be possible for members to get some preliminary information via email prior to our meetings on topics to be discussed. It is difficult to discuss issues when given lengthy written information at the start of the meeting with no time to read and absorb information. Request will be presented to Sherry Engelman, Community Health Administrator. Member Mary Lavelle reported that the Edina Health and Wellness Committee would be meeting on September 21, 2011 to decide on a spring date for the Expo. Member Mellum provided information regarding asthma and concerns for the effects of wood smoke on this condition. Mellum encourages the City to ban wood smoke. She further reported that the three wood burning stations @ Centennial Lakes will be converted to gas burning. Mellum asked to present a power point presentation at the next meeting to educate the Committee on the urgency of this issue. Lavelle asked what specifically Mellum recommended. Chair Kingston asked that we hold on the issue until she got to the agenda item dealing with the CITY CODE. Mellum was encouraged by several members to develop a concise, specific proposal for the Committee’s consideration at the next meeting. Mellum next recommended that the Health Committee meet monthly because there was too much business to be handled quarterly meetings. Lavelle suggested that this was not possible this year. Chair Kingston recommended that this be put on the agenda at the next meeting. Chair Kingston reported that the SHIP project has been funded for next year. Members received a summary of issues in Edina that are in place, issues currently being worked on and those to be considered and prioritized for the future. Document provided in this report. Chair Kingston distributed the CITY CODE Section 1503-Community Health Committee to the members. The Purpose and Duties of the Committee was read and discussed. It was emphasized that the duty of this Committee is to study and advise the Community Health Board on community health activities. A discussion followed regarding whether or not we were fulfilling our mission. A conclusion was reached that individual members would come to the next meeting prepared to state appropriate health concerns and to prioritize in order to discuss and provide the Health Board with recommendations including evaluating any Resource Lists that the City has available. Areas of interest suggested were SHIP funding, Farmers Market, Air quality, Police, Fire, School and Park policies. Members agreed that it was wise to examine the City Code for this Committee. Student Maggie Stang suggested investigating a possible web site for this Committee to make connections on issues at times other than at the quarterly meetings. She agreed to research this possibility. Chair Kingston reported that the Edina Farmer’s Market was well received this year. She also reported that the food served at the Centennial Lakes Concessions and Edinborough Park would follow the nutrition guidelines as outlined in the SHIP project. STAFF COMMENTS: None ADJOURNMENT Motion was made my member Lavelle and seconded by member Matt Doscoth to adjourn. Vote to adjourn was unanimous. Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm. __________________________ Mary Lavelle Next Meeting: October 18, 2011 @ City Hall @6:30pm
