HomeMy WebLinkAboutEXAMPLE LAKE ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES Example Lake Association Activities Purpose of Lake Associations: Shoreline owners who wish to work together to provide aquatic plant management above and beyond what the city provides for their lake may form a lake association. The association must include as members more than 50% of the shoreline owners, incorporate as a nonprofit and follow all applicable laws. The board of directors of an official lake association has the power to make decisions about service providers, types of treatment and special assessments on behalf of the association and shoreline owners. Example lake association calendar: April/May All members - Spring kickoff meeting, share planned lake treatments, water quality education October All members - Annual meeting, discuss how the season went, identify potential changes for next year, membership dues, board elections. December Board of directors – renew nonprofit January Board of directors - Board meeting to decide on treatments, submit to City of Edina (optional – could decide on treatments at the October annual meeting) February Board of directors - Board meeting to choose provider Steps to form a Lake Association: 1. Determine interest in forming a lake association. Send letters, go door-to-door, send emails, etc. 2. Hold an initial meeting and invite all shoreline owners. Give at least two weeks’ notice. Discuss: a. Existing management and special assessment (if applicable) b. Desire(s) for future management c. Interest in lake association d. Volunteers for forming lake association e. General water quality education 3. Officially incorporate the lake association as a nonprofit and pass bylaws 4.
