HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-05-02 National Police Week riF;a PROCLAMATION NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2017 WHEREAS, the week of May 14th—20th, 2017, is National Police Week in the United States; and WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Edina Police Department;and WHEREAS, nearly 52,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 15,000 injuries;and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791,almost 21,183 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, 394 new names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial this spring, including 143 officers killed in 2016 and 25 19 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now;and WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored during the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund's 27"Annual Candlelight Vigil, on the May 13', 2017 in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, the Candlelight Vigil is part of National Police Week,which takes place this year on May 14`"-20`"; and WHEREAS, May 15t' is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all the fallen officers and their families and U.S. Flags should be flown at half-staff,and NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Edina, MN, hereby proclaims May 14th-20th, 2017, as NATIONAL POLICE WEEK In the City of Edina, MN and call upon the people of Edin t ,ob erve this week in honor of the men and women whose diligence and professionalism kee h re idents and city of Edina safe.
