PROCLAMATION
PUBLIC ART EDINA DAY
JUNE 14, 2017
Whereas, public art takes a variety of forms, including sculpture, painting, stained glass, mosaics and
tapestry as well as more contemporary forms such as earthworks, light and sound, murals, installations and
performance; and
Whereas, public art is free, accessible, open to everyone and possible to experience daily during every-day
activities; and
Whereas, public art creates an inclusive and connected community by serving as a nexus for gathering and
for conversation between people of different ages, stages and diverse life experiences; and
Whereas, public art heightens a community's sense of pride and belonging, enriches new development,
and gives neighborhoods a unique sense of identity; and
Whereas, public art promotes lifelong learning, inspires and activates imaginations, and instills a sense of
curiosity and wonder; and
Whereas, public art provides a competitive edge by stimulating commerce, increasing real estate values,
attracting tourism, and elevating quality of life; and
Whereas, public art is an inherently collaborative community project, involving artists, architects,
designers, community residents, civic leaders, funders and construction teams; and
Whereas, public art can provide a link to our past and a bridge to our future as our community works to
remain competitive, relevant and innovative;
Now, Therefore, I,James Hovland, Mayor of Edina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2017 as
June 14, 2017 as Public Art Edina Day
And urge my fellow citizens to join me in supporting Public Art Edina's work to holp snake our community a
premier place for living, learning, raising families and doing business.
