Missing Statue Pieces Returned, Reward Still Active
Edina, Minn., Dec. 11, 2015 – The stolen “Three Trees” statue pieces were returned to Fred
Richards Park between Dec. 4 and Dec. 7. The reward is still active.
A passerby called the Edina Police Department after recognizing the clay pieces of art were back at Fred
Richards Park. He said he had recognized the pieces from a news story about the sculpture that was
stolen from Fred Richards Park sometime between Oct. 26 and Nov. 19. The sculpture, “Three Trees”
by Kevin Komandina, was donated to the City in 2011. It was deconstructed into nine pieces before
being moved and stored at Fred Richards, while the Edina Promenade was under construction earlier
this year.
The Edina Crime Prevention Fund is still offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the
apprehension, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft.
The Police Department also recovered the large bronze statue, “Lady of Justice,” that was stolen from
Heritage of Edina Nov. 23 after arresting a man on drug-related charges.
“Photos of the statue happened to be on the man’s phone,” said Sgt. Nate Mendel. “One of our officers,
who is trained in digital forensics, was able to extract GPS and additional data from the man’s smart
phone, which ultimately lead us to the statue.”
Further charges are pending upon the results of the investigation.
