Three Officers Awarded Edina Police Departmental
Commendation
Edina, Minn., April 25, 2016 – The City of Edina formally recognized Officers Dave Boosalis, Keith Boerger
and Eric Carlson, awarding them the Edina Police Departmental Commendation for their bravery and quick
actions during life-threating conditions on Aug. 8, 2015.
Officers were dispatched to check on the wellbeing of a 36-year-old man living with his parents. Upon arrival,
officers spoke with the mother while outside the residence. She advised officers she was fearful of her son and
had been threatened. She expressed concern about her son’s mental health and wellbeing and requested
assistance in moving him to a care facility for help. Officers were advised the man was alone with his father in
the residence, was not in possession of weapons and was unaware officers had been called.
Boosalis and Boerger entered the home to make contact with the man while Carlson provided back-up. The
man appeared agitated and was concealing his hands and lower body behind a blanket. Officers gave the man
multiple commands to drop the blanket and reveal his hands. The man failed to comply, then threw the
blanket aside, revealing he was holding a handgun. The man raised the gun and pointed it directly at officers.
Officers, fearing for their lives and the lives of others, drew their weapons and engaged the man with gun-fire.
The man was struck several times and fell to the floor.
During the engagement, Carlson quickly escorted the parents from the residence to a point of safety.
After neutralizing the threat, Boosalis and Boerger secured the scene, summoned paramedics and immediately
provided emergency medical aid to the man. The man was transferred to the Hennepin County Medical
Center for his injuries and was later released.
