At a recent gathering, Edina’s Police and Fire departments presented these individuals with Certificates of Merit for their heroic actions. At 10:29 a.m. Thursday, April 7, about 30 minutes into the class, a 68-year-old man participating in the class collapsed, falling to the ground from his bike. The man was not breathing and did not have a pulse. He was in cardiac arrest. YMCA members Sari Sanchez, Dawn Ingvalson and Steve Curry jumped to action and began assisting the man. The trio immediately began administering CPR and located an automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) to resuscitate the man. By the time officers and paramedics arrived, the man not only had a pulse, but was conscious and alert. He is expected to make a full recovery. “The quick actions of these three individuals saved this man’s life. We’re very grateful for their heroism,” said Edina Fire Chief Tom Schmitz. “It’s situations like this that demonstrate how important CPR training and readily available AEDs are when seconds count.” The three were presented with Certificates of Merit from the City and gifts from the Southdale YMCA at a gathering at the YMCA Thursday, May 19. The daughter of the victim was also present. For more information, contact the Edina Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department at 952-826-0330. -30-
