Vayda Residence Receives 2016 Heritage Award
Edina, Minn., May 26, 2016 – The City of Edina Heritage Preservation Board (HPB) awarded Doug and
Patricia Vayda the 2016 Heritage Award for commitment to preserving the historic character of their home,
located at 5201Woodale Ave., as it was renovated and expanded. The Edina Heritage Award is given to
individuals, families, companies or organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the
preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and use of Edina’s heritage resources.
“When the house was for sale in 2011, we had people coming in to the Planning Department inquiring about
whether they could tear down the home and rebuild, since it was on a double lot. It was so great that the
Vaydas saw the potential in the property,” said Senior Planner Joyce Repya. “We are excited to celebrate this
home as a perfect example of this month’s Preservation Month theme, ‘Celebrate the past, as you plan for the
future.’”
The Vaydas worked closely with their architects, Rehkamp Larson Architects, and contractor, JS Johnson &
Associates, to maintain the integrity of the 1935 Tudor home. In order to preserve signature rooms such as
the foyer, dining room and vaulted living room, the addition was designed to sit back on the site, allowing the
historic living room gable to keep its prominent position on the front façade.
“When we moved here from the East Coast in 1991, we were driving through the neighborhood when we
saw this house and said, ‘Wow we love this house!’ It was a coincidence that we saw this go on the market
when it did 20 years later,” said Patricia Vayda. “We feel very fortunate to have landed in Edina, because we
feel very blessed to live in this community. And we feel very fortunate to have been able to restore this
home.”
The height of the eaves and profiles, sash size of the windows, style of the brick, interior trim profiles, door
and arch styles, and plaster wall texture all remain untouched in the original areas of the house and are
meticulously repeated throughout the new space. New cabinetry inspired by existing details, custom wrought
iron railings with a historic blackened finish and salvaged door hardware help to preserve the house’s
integrity.
The overall sensitivity to scale, form, materials and craftsmanship successfully created a seamless unified house
with consistent period character, and elevated its overall size and function for modern living.
The award was presented at the May 19 meeting of the Edina City Council.
