May 4 Declared National Bike to School Day
Edina, Minn., April 26, 2016 – The City of Edina encourages its youngest residents to ride their bikes to
school on Wednesday, May 4, as part of “National Bike to School Day.”
National Bike to School Day is an annual event designed to get more school children biking and walking to
school. The day was created to help increase interest in walking and biking throughout the school year,
which in turn, helps build healthy, lifelong exercise habits. The benefits of daily exercise for youth are well
known and range from improved health, lower body mass and higher attendance rates and student academic
performance.
Motorists driving on May 4 are reminded to slow down and watch for extra children who may be out on
their bikes or crossing the street on foot.
“National Bike to School Day is an opportunity for kids, their parents and the community to appreciate the
benefits of active transportation,” said Transportation Planner Mark Nolan. “It’s also an opportunity for road
users to recognize that Edina’s ‘Living Streets’ include those on bikes and on foot.”
