Fire damages Edina home on Jefferson Avenue
Edina, Minn., June 24, 2016 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue
at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 23, after the homeowner called 9-1-1 reporting visible flames in a bedroom of the
house.
Shortly after arriving, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. Fire damage was limited to the
bedroom. However, smoke damage was found throughout the house. One adult was transported to a local
hospital for possible smoke inhalation and burns.
The cause of the fire was found to have been improperly discarded smoking materials.
“Smoking is dangerous,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “Besides the obvious health implications, smoking is the
leading cause of civilian fire-related deaths in the home. Make sure to properly dispose of all smoking
materials. Completely douse butts and ashes with water before throwing them away.”
The Edina Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department received mutual aid from the Hopkins, Minnetonka,
Richfield and St. Louis Park fire departments.
